    Cmbthumper 08' KTM 950 SE

From ADVrider and makes total sense now. I'll bag and tag it "Boatman said: It's a plug from one of the EPC valves that was removed when it was desmogged."

    Cmbthumper 08' KTM 950 SE

Since there were and possibly still some 950SE owners on here i figured i would ask for some help. Remember total 950SE noob owner here. I pulled my carbs to clean them, check jetting from PO etc etc. What i need help with is identifying this connector and what it was for. While pulling the TPS and Carb heater connections i needed to get some slack in order to do so. The slack was buried just under the coolant tank and this connector came with the slack. By the looks of it and the dirt on the weather tight portion it hasn't been plugged in for quit a while. I can guarantee i didn't unplug it. I have looked at the wiring diagram and the only place the Solid Orange and Green w/Red tracer shows up is for the EPC1 and EPC2 but those are plugged in and different connectors. It is not aftermarket add on as it is seems to be in the same harness as where the TPS/Heater comes from before diving into the main harness. I can list my modifications surrounding this area and that might help ID this thing. I'll keep researching and thanks a 1000% if you know what this is for. Finally getting around to cleaning the carbs. Se pics just in case anyone was curious what one of those carb things look like. I can say with 100% confidence that i will only be doing this once and will do my best to get it right. If not, she will go up for sale to an owner who can keep her breathing and eating right.

    Lots of new members recently

Welcome. I hope that is NOT Wierdriders plated bike as i will be not happy with Jim for selling without contacting me. Either way, ride safe and these are a great group of guys to learn from.
  8. I remember this from a National Geographic documentary years ago. GPR, metal detectors, drones etc were deployed. All that was found in the wash by Mexicali was Square Ship Nails, Some other ship spike thing, a few rigging pieces and wood "Of the Era". It was a theory that IF a ship made it up to the Salton Sea and got stranded it would have been dismantled as building materials by the locals so there would be no "Site" to visit. There is suppose to be a cave carving from the local native population of the ship but was proven to be "Fake".
  9. Did a test ride today with my Dad on my recent upgrades to my 07' KTM 450 EXC. It has been a while, like late May since i through my leg over it. Forgot how much i like this bike. We decided to take the easy route Gate 3 aka Lusardi Trail down in Orosco Ridge before going on Gate 2 up to the Glider Port aka the Pines. All i could stand was Lusardi and will try again next weekend. Definitely still some riding cobwebs to get rid of. There Back until my GoPro Died

    1st Ride Since Late May

Thanks. He is my #1 riding partner and gets 1st dibs when i find the energy to actually ride. Ha Ha! Unless a motor is siezed, aint nobody riding 2 up on my bikes. He doesn't like to lead so he is always behind me. He is far from slow but he says he doesn't like to hold other riders up. I pull over every mile or so, after a tricky section, pedestrians cars etc just to make sure he makes it through. I forgot to charge my GP and i usually let him lead a few times a day and push him along like he did to me when growing up riding.

    2022 GEICO rally!

I am too cheap for the Golden Tire Big Boned so tried the Shinko MX216 Big Boned on my 500 as i read they were the same expect for the name/$$. Will NOT and have NOT run another front tire on any dirt bike i have owned. Don't ride in the wet but sticks like glue everywhere.

2007 KTM 450 EXC by cmbthumper

Not a build thread just updates as i make it more "Mine". 2007 KTM 450 EXC I am giving it a facelift as the PO had the controls pretty mangled, the wiring behind the headlight was seconds away from a fire IMO, Bent hand Guards and i didn't like the bar bend. So, I changed the following: · After months of searching i finally found a sub mount to use my V1 GPR that I pulled when I sold my 525 · Powder coated the Frame mount post thing · Ditched the KTM instrument Cluster all together · HDB Top Clamp · HDB Lower Dash · USB Cigarette charger thing · Trail tech Vapor · LED Turn Signals on Mask · Sicass Racing Direct Plug In Turn Signal Indicator Rewire Kit · Relocated the key ** I wanted to put it on the HDB mount but it was to tall and hit the GPR · Sicass Racing Bar Switch · 09’ KTM 450 Supermoto Kill Start Switch as I hate Separate buttons · Cycra Handguards w /Cycra mounts for Neken Bars · ODI Rogue Grips · KTM 6 days Handlebars ** This is the bend that I like the best for my bad wrists Still need to run wire for power to the USB thing and run the Trail Tech Tach signal wire. 2007 KTM 450 EXC by cmbthumper

Not sure what you mean on the spacing. My OG Triple Clamps had 2 snapped fender bolts that i could not get out so i used the KTM PN and found some on ebay for cheap. When i go them the stem did not have a cutout for the Key Lock Pin so i had to drill that out. It was marked 2007 KTM 450SX in paint so i suspect the clamps don't change just the stem base do the model. Just a guess though. This was my 3rd setup ive done with HDB stuff. My KTM 500 and XR400 pieces parts were Pre-Covid. I had an issue with my XR400 Dash Mount where the holes were machined out incorrectly for the Trail Tech Turn Signals. I knew he was the owner but i am going to guess his name was Steve. It took a few e-mails, texts and a phone call to solve but everything went as it should customer service wise. I ordered the 450 stuff here just a few months ago and ZERO problems with updates, shipping etc. So, for me they still get my $$. This but i am a cheap bastard so got one off fleabay for $6 and simply because i like Orange better. Had the same one on my 500 and 525 and the rubber pieces is crap for protection. 14. Very true and totally agree. To some new buyers the bike years makes a difference for some reason. A 2022 DRZ is still a 2000 DRZ for example. These may sell because of those that wanted Honda AT or KTM but couldn't afford one. The name throwing (KTM) and looks (Honda AT) might make them sell on a decent level.
  15. While the motor pieces parts are cover with known KTM dealers I'd take one if the Chassis was covered by the same amount or more dealers. Since it likes like an Africa Twin is carrying a KTM baby i wonder if the AT aftermarket will fit on these.

2007 KTM 450 EXC by cmbthumper

Thank you. YOu should. A clean dash sure is nice plus it puts a little modern twist on the bike. Like anything i do i would do a lot of things differently. This was a little more difficult as there was not a lot of Examples i could find online with this era of KTM using an older sub mount GPR Damper. In reality, using a Scott's system it would be more "Plug & Play". Hours into it? Tough one as i don't keep track. With my Severe case of Anal OCD what takes and average person say 4 hours to do takes me and easy 8hrs. With all the pieces parts to do just the dash it could easily be done on a Saturday. I went from replacing the steering bearings to the dash as you see it so mine was a few weekends as i had time.

2007 KTM 450 EXC by cmbthumper

Facelift is All done and ready for a healing run. Surprised as i HHAATTEE anything electrical and it all worked. Not sure how but i am definitely NOT getting smarter.
  18. 100% agree and Spot On. The reason i went from a 19' KTM 500 EXC "Tuned & Decorked" to an 07' KTM 525 EXC. To me, the 500 was a Jekyll and Hyde bike and needed to be constantly ridden at pace and was to "Pipey" for. My 500 was my first KTM ever as i kinda bought it on a "i need a bike to finish the riding season". After i sent my 500 down the rode to an actual rider i did some research as i liked KTM and it's components. I narrowed it down to the 525 or 450 EXC in the RFS era and of course living in CA i wanted a Factory Dual Sport so it was only the 07' year that fit the bill. The 08-11 KTM's didn't settle well with my checklist on reliability from the oiling issue and the 12'+ were to much $$. I test rode my 525 and it felt like my XR400 or 600 where i sat more "In the bike" than on top like my 500. Power wise down low it loves to lug, tractor like torque, Mid range to top end power was linear yet pulled like a train until the speed scares me. Perfect combo for a what i consider my sell to be as a Lazy rider.
  19. Having had a 19' KTM 500 and a 07' 525 EXC for the nearest comparison, there is a little difference between an EFI and a properly tuned carb save for cost to get each one to run right. The motors are soo different in how they deliver power they really can't be compared IMO. My $.02 is that the bike needs to be "Tuned" or "properly jetted" to bring it to it's full potential.
  20. I would sign up for this not once but twice. I would even take a day off work to do so and that would be my 3rd day off this year. Yes, work rules my life.

New to me 17 KTM 500 exc

After my 19' 500 EXC i learned a little bit to be dangerous. Reed is/was for passing sound requirements. Taking it out looses a little low end and end gains a little top end. Unless you are Tobey Price i doubt anyone would notice. Mine was so lean it flamed out at the most dangerous times. Almost let a $10K bike sit until i could learn why it was doing so. End cap should only be done while adding fuel aka a JD Tuner or the like so you are safe there. I found a 17' Unlocked ECU and sent it to Blais Racing for his tune. Mine was a Different bike afterwards that is for sure. Votrex was too expensive for me at the time so i passed on that. The Get/Athena just came out and was way more $$ than the Vortex. Vortex is the replace and never touch ECU upgrade as it is near perfect even today. Vibes? Ha Ha! Sorry that was #4 or 5 on the list of reasons i sold mine. Supposed to get better once broken in but it got worse. Holy H was mine bad and almost unrideble after 30min. Coming from an XR it was definitely "different". Like any bike, deal with it strengths and weaknesses and ride it or move on to something else because 85% of riding is in your head.

New to me 17 KTM 500 exc

Very nice. Looks brand new. I am so glad i Sumo'd my 525 and kept the setup for my 450 as it easily knocks 20 years of your age. Soooo fun.
  23. I have hiked many thousands of miles and learned to go lighter every trip. After i could no longer hike i transitioned into Overland camping with my Jeep. While the components were somewhat the same, Again, you learn to go lighter every trip and be as efficient as possible. The point is that you will NEVER and i mean NEVER no matter how much your buddy has camped or bikecamped ever be as prepared or know what works or doesn't without doing it yourself. Help and advise are always key but experience Donald Trumps it all. Soon i will be trying my venture into Bikecamping and have zero shame in that while i have experience in other "Camping" venues i will be a complete noob and will accept any help and criticism to make the experience more enjoyable for me and anyone around me.
  24. Awesome right up and sounded like a fun ride. Funny thing is that when i ride it is usually with my 76yo dad who has more energy than i do at 50. There is always "Where do we turn to continue riding". Joys of being retired i guess.

    Sin nombre

Level of Rider? Never been asked that but ok. You'd really have to watch my You Tube vids to gauge for yourself. Know Zubb by screen name but never rode with him so can't put my level I'm the rider everyone waits for cause i am enjoying the ride and the scenery and taking pics at the same time. Did Mike crash? No, just give him a second as there were a few spots he would have stopped at. Due to a medical condition i rarely get to ride and when i do it is usually for 2-3hrs max. Plus my 450exc is getting a facelift, my 950se is currently a paperweight with carb issues and my VFR is getting new fork seals so it will be a few more weeks before i can ride anyway I have been drinking coffee since about 11yo and due to my medical condition i LOVE coffee but admit i know jack about it. Always wanted to do one of those schools and taste testing things.
