    Long distance ride

Nice route. Did something similar a few years ago. Recommend you take the ferry across and come in to Quebec from north side. I found Quebec to be friendly. Stayed in a motel inside the walled city. Despite the many signs saying no motorcycles, I was ok just riding in to park at motel. Just don't tour around in the walled city. GoAdv day 23
  4. I'm thinking about trying to tackle Mojave trail this weekend on my 1150gs. Anybody interested friday-sunday? If anyone wants to go, I'll start researching current consitions.
  5. Anybody going to the HorizonsUnlimited event September 21-24? I'm thinking about riding up and camping on my R1150GS and would welcome company. http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/events/california-2017 Carl

  9. I'm thinking about taking off to Baja Thursday through Sunday. No plan yet. Thinking about crossing at tecate and making my way to San Filipe thurs. further South Fiiday, then making my way back. I'll be on my old r1150 GS. Anyone is welcome to join me.
  10. A couple of us are heading down to Baja 12/26 - 12/30. Others are welcome to join us. This will be a big bike ride; I'm on an old GS1150 and other guy is on Vstrom. Pace will be moderate to easy and we expect to be about 70% paved roads 30% dirt but, since we don't know where we're going you'll need to be prepared for anything. Expect to camp 1 or 2 nights otherwise we'll be in hotels. Route is not determined yet and we're intentionally keeping it loose. Basic concept: 12/26 Cross boarder at Tecate early in the morning riding south on Mex 3 to Encenada continuing further South on Mex 1. Sleep somewhere, ride, etc. Thinking about heading up east coast to San Filipe and crossing back in Mexicali or Mex 3 to Tecate. See this is really loose right now. Trying to figure out what to see and do. I don't plan on this trip being all riding, it's about sight seeing Baja. Home by evening 12/30.
  11. I'm heading out solo on a long ride for 2-8 weeks. Basically until I get tired of being away from home. I'll post a ride report when I return but, I'll be blogging as I go here: http://goadvblog.wordpress.com/ Plan is to make my way to Galveston, spend a week with the wife and run the 70.3 ironman then head up the East coast toward Quebec city across to Vancouver Island. Then it's North or South from there. If the weather sucks too bad, I may head South early and explore some of Mexico. It's all open since I'm travelling alone. The plan is also to camp unless the weather is too bad. I could use some virtual company. Carl

Surprisingly, it doesn't sound any different than with the can on. The noise attenuation is all in the Cat. I wouldn't have believed it except that I heard Mr Ja Ja's. There are also several threads on it over at advrider so I went for it. I'm a bit worried about a forest service person not liking it. My Staintune exhaust is straight through with no spark arrest either so either way I'd be in trouble-although this kind of stands out visually. There is some info that the cat also acts as a spark arrest but I don't know the validity of that claim. Either way I don't think it will pass an inspection. The forest service person probably won't want a technical discussion, they'll push a stick in the pipe and call foul... It's a modified exhaust system any way you slice it. But, it's not for power, it's not for noise, it's not to eliminate pollution devices, it is so my luggage will fit. I want the cat and wouldn't consider the y-pipe which would make it loud and allow sparks. Lots of people riding off-road this way and I haven't seen any threads on folks having trouble. I will research more on the spark issue before heading off road but, I think it's good. Carl

Yes, although I'll never just ride into a dealer and have them replace my tires again. Do it myself or at least deliver the wheels and tires off the bike. A few more trips like this last one and I'd have paid for a nice tire changer and balancer. The convenience is really nice and service was great but there's a reason I'm riding a 16 year old bike... TKC80 front K60 rear based on recommendation.
  20. It was dark, it was cold, it was 6AM in the Escondido BMW Motorcycles parking lot Wednesday morning, and it was time to go to Mexico. Jon and I decided to make this trip a couple days prior. Jon was on his knobbied 800GS and I on my 80/20 shoed 1150GS. We headed South to Tecate, topping off our fuel before crossing the border. We got flagged and waved over for a VIN check. We were the only ones there so they didn't have anything else to do. In two minutes we were back on our way. This was my first time in Mexico in 20 years or more. The difference in driving styles, manners, and rules was immediately apparent. After a wrong turn and some back tracking to find the right dirt road, we made our way to Hacienda Santa Veronica for breakfast. Asada tacos ruled the morning. Service was friendly but being frozen, I was disappointed at the lack of heat. I wouldn't be thawing out here. Back on the road we headed toward "Compadre Trail" (?). We were worried about mud given the storm we just had hit Northern Baja hardest. Riding conditions could not have been better. No dust, trails were just wet enough to be packed hard. It was great conditions. Yes, there was some sand, big puddles, mud, and ice in some shadowed areas but, generally it was awesome. I had plenty of oh ---- moments but no get-offs. Back on the pavement we headed east for lunch. The big bikes shined here and I relaxed and enjoyed the sites. Topped off fuel again and stopped for Asada tacos for lunch. I walked to a liquor store and picked up some sodas. We met some folks at the taco place from Northern California. A group of about 17 were on their way to Mikes for a 60th birthday party. We would be seeing them again. These guys and gals also do a Thanksgiving day run to mikes for Thanksgiving...35 years in a row. That's something to strive for! Trail to Mikes was good. More ice and the stream was flowing but I was already soaked and cold. Jeans and cheap hiking shoes do not make good riding gear. At Mikes, my visions of warm/hot baja weather was just wishful thinking. We arrived around 3:30ish. No heat to be found, that would get turned on during dinner which was at 7:30. It was in the 40s and dropping, finally the heat came on. By dinner it was below freezing; I hope the rooms are warm by the time we get there...they were. It was straight to bed for me, I was beat. The birthday party revelers were going strong as I drifted off to sleep. After breakfast, we headed home. The riding was even better than yesterday. At this early hour the ground was frozen hard and was working well with my street biased tires. Making good time we arrived at Compadre trail head and Jon and I decided to split up. I had enough dirt for this weekend and headed to Encinada then to TJ on the toll road. The TJ border crossing was its usual mess. Street vendors kept telling me to just ride to the front which I eventually did, saved 30 minutes and didn't get yelled at by anyone. Jon took the dirt and actually beat me home. I was home and in a hot shower by 2:15. (There was NO agua caliente at Mikes.). Learned a few things on this trip about my riding gear, what I packed, etc. No good pics this trip, we were just riding... Carl
  21. It was nice meeting everyone. Thank you for letting me crash the party. Happy to have made the Box Canyon ride and spending my first night out moto camping. Super slabbed it home Sat morning making it home in time for my son's parade and then the company Christmas party. Looking forward to the next ride and sticking around for the main event... Dan, thanks for setting this up, tips on the DVD, valve gauges, and riding gear. Mr JaJa, Lots of good info and I'm sure that I'll have a ton of questions for you about 1150GSs. Phillip, glad we were both late and got to ride out to Borrego together. Also, cycle gear was great as I got myself an extra Christmas present! Mikey I think you talked me into a new stove and I love the 990! It was dark when we arrived and I left early so I didn't capture any good pictures but, here are a couple shapshots.
