    Military plane crashes in Ocotillo

I played golf at Torrey Pines on Monday and got paired with a Marine C-130 pilot from the same squadron. He was part of the team that investigated the incident and said they cut the plane into pieces and hauled it away. Put parts they could salvage back into the supply system and junked the rest I guess. The pilot who landed in the field was this guy’s best bud. He said they know exactly how the accident happened but did not share that information. I have not seen results of the investigation shared publicly yet either. This guy graduated from the Naval Academy and played on their golf team. Shot 71 on Monday and hardly ever plays. Fun to watch. Also has a masters degree in Aerospace Engineering from Stanford. Impressive dude and nice guy. With all the crap going on in this country it gave me a nice boost of optimism that we are still producing people like this. It’s not all doom and gloom out there!

    New bike - ALTA EXR

Here's Marc Fenigstein, co-founder and CEO (former I guess) of Alta Motors, speaking at an industrial design conference a mere three months ago: https://vimeo.com/298615428 Sure did not sound then like the company was on the verge of folding. Things obviously changed quickly. I hope they figure it out and find a way to resume operations.
  3. ADV Bum - No need to apologize. I just didn't know if I was contacting the right person. Thanks for posting back (Randy, too). I'll contact you again off-line. Bob
  4. I've been a member on this forum since 2013. Never very active (posting or riding) but I've behaved myself. I just sold a 2013 500 EXC today after listing it on craigslist yesterday. The guy got a great deal on an awesome bike. I would have posted it here first but I'm not able to post in the "for sale" thread, which I think is a puzzling policy that only hurts the members here in the end. Why not just require a minimum number of posts like many other forums? Anyway, I don't mind paying to become a "real" member. Not only so that I can sell stuff but because I've enjoyed the forum. But I've tried to contact admins at least a couple of times over the years (including this morning) and I've never gotten a response. Today I messaged ADV Bum. Don't remember who I tried before. I have some other stuff to sell that I think members here would be interested in. I'm not a scammer. I just never got into dirt riding like I thought I would, mainly because the dirt is too far away. So I'll stick to my Super Tenere for now. So who do I contact to become a paying member of this site? Or is membership closed to scum like me? (An argument could definitely be made along those lines!) Thanks, Bob

    Yamaha rider killed?

Man, I would hope so. There's usually tragedy on both sides of something like this. I could have been on either end of something like this many times so I'm not going to make any judgments without all the facts. But if Mr. Crown Vic was negligent then sorry doesn't really cut it. Somebody mentioned texting. If that's what happened then I definitely have zero mercy for Mr. CV. That's as bad or worse than driving drunk.

    Yamaha rider killed?

This is the rider who died in this accident: http://obits.dignitymemorial.com/dignity-memorial/obituary.aspx?n=John-Morgen&lc=1954&pid=184062826&mid=7284497 Sad story, but it's great that he was still out there doing what he loved at 83. He was riding a 2017 WR250R. Edit: I didn't read back through the whole thread before I posted but see now that paulmbowers already posted the gentleman's name a couple of weeks ago. Although they misspelled his last name in that article. The obit is worth reading, though. One thing to have a name, another to see a face and read the life story.
  8. Had to post this. I'm sure some of you guys can relate to what almost happened here. Made my tummy flutter just watching it!

    Biker Hauler Question

You made that? Very impressive. I'm curious - did you save money going DIY or was this a labor of love with cost a secondary factor?

    Biker Hauler Question

For those who like to spend money and are too lazy to roll the bike up a ramp: https://www.rockymountainatvmc.com/p/875/-/91114/Ultimate-MX-Hauler-Motorcycle-Carrier-Black Yeah, I forked for one of these. Works great, and I'd be very happy with the investment if I ever used it! Some day I'll find time to ride the crap out of my EXC, I know I will ...

    '04 1150 GS air filter

Sweet! Lot's of K&N haters out there. If the engine blows up I doubt it will be from the air filter. It's a BMW after all. Don't they all blow up eventually?

  13. I ride a Super Tenere and there are so few out there and they're so low-maintenance that it's hard to find a mechanic who has ever worked on one before, including at the Yamaha dealers in town. Most owners are older and experienced and do most of the wrenching themselves. Fun Bike Center can handle routine stuff, but it can be tough getting in there on short notice. I have a service manual, although right now it's at George's shop (Suspension 101). If that would help let me know. I'd be happy to loan it.

AMA Action ALERT - IMPORTANT !

I sent the message. I hope a lot more did as well. What a b.s. policy: "... base park use and management decisions first and foremost on their potential impact on climate change." Vague enough to give park staff arbitrary power. Pretty scary.

Still laughing. You're sick, Wierdrider. Would like to ride with you some day but worried about your Zubb bromance?

Man, I laughed hard at this one. Thanks, Wierdrider! I needed a laugh and a break from the election coverage!!

    Ruski Hardcore

Who would be insane enough to ride in the side car of of these things? Or is the sidecar just for show and/or gear? Doesn't really matter I guess - looks like a blast to ride! Somebody please explain - how does the engine run with the air intake and exhaust completely submerged? Other than a snorkel, which I didn't see, what enables a bike to run through deep water like that?

Riding stoned: Article on MJ Rx and DS/MX

Crazy and reckless to carry weed or any other illegal substances across a border. I went on an awesome fly-in fishing trip in Canada with some old high school buddies about ten years ago. We drove up into Canada from Minnesota. After we got dropped off by the rickety old float plane at a cabin on a remote lake (did I mention how awesome it was?) I found out that one of the guys had brought a stash of weed. I was pissed, especially that he didn't tell everybody. I would not have crossed that border knowing he had that in the vehicle.

    Tank size - Steering Issues

My 2013 500 EXC had the Acerbis 5.3 gal tank on it when I bought it. The guy I bought if from used it for long dual sport rides down in Baja. I rode once with that tank out in Ocotillo Wells and had a very hard get-off. Front end got away from me going too fast up a sandy/clumpy/rocky hill. After that I switched back to the stock tank and added a stabilizer. It took me a long time to recover from that wipeout so haven't even tested the new setup yet. Confident it will be much better, though. I also bought a second fuel pump so I can swap tanks easily when I want to dual sport on it.
  20. I bought an Elka shock for my Super Tenere a couple of years ago (group buy on Super Tenere forum) and was never able to even come close to getting the sag set correctly. I went back and forth with them about it for a while back then. They were willing to swap in a stiffer spring, but I didn't want to pull the shock and ship it back to them in Montreal and have the bike out of commission for several weeks. So I've been living with it. The ride is not awful but the bike sits low and I scrape metal way too easily on Highland Valley Road! It's time to finally get this taken care of. I took a bunch of measurements over the weekend and I'm not even sure that I need a stiffer spring. I think the main problem is not enough preload. The factory preload on the spring (with preload adjuster completely backed off) is only 1/8" (3.2mm). And my total preload adjustment range is only 1/4" (6.4mm) from there with the hydraulic preload adjuster. This is on an 8" spring. With the preload adjuster maxed out my rider sag is 70mm when it should be around 55mm. The static sag (bike only) is 37mm and should be about 20mm. The fact that both sags are ~15mm high tells me that the sping rate is pretty close, at least for me with no gear and with no luggage on the bike. I emailed my measurements to Elka and they said the factory preload should be "no more than 5mm", which sounds very low. But then again the Tenere is not a dirt bike. (Total suspension travel is 190mm.) They also said that the preload adjustment range should be 10mm (I'm only getting 6.4mm). I still don't want to ship the shock back to Montreal. I'd rather find a local shop that can help me figure this out, and can then see the shock on the bike to get it dialed in. I don't have the tools or expertise to do the work myself. The shock is a triple clicker with a hydraulic preload adjuster and remote reservoir. I think the factory preload needs to be increased, combined possibly with a slightly stiffer spring. I'm not sure what (if anything) can be done to increase the preload adjustment range, but I would love that as well if possible. I ended up posting way more information than I intended to but figured the suspension geeks here would get into the numbers. To the rest of you I apologize for the autobiography on my suspension woes! So, any shop recommendations? Or any of you tuners (Spaugh, Suspenders) willing to give this a shot? Thanks, RJS

2009 KTM 690 RR Build Project

Seeing this thread for the first time. Awesome job on the build, Strega. The before and after shots are incredible. Who cares how much it cost?!! Any luck yet with the tablet vibrations? My first reaction from the pics is that the tablet is mounted pretty far away from the chassis on long supports. One support is the RAM mount and its base, then there are the two long ones at the front. The supports set up long moment arms so that whatever vibration forces injected at the base of the supports get magnified at the ends of the supports. I'm not a ME, but it looks like the tablet mount is just vulnerable to vibration by design. Wish I could suggest some solutions but none come to mind given the constraints of where the tablet needs to sit on the bike to be usable. Tough problem, but there has to be a way.

    need Elka shock serviced

I talked to George and he's going to help me out (thanks, George!). Brad's a good guy, too. He redid the front and rear springs on my 500 EXC a couple of years ago. Definitely an ace with WP suspension. The Super Tenere is a completely different animal. If you see this, Brad, I'm curious. Do you work on big bikes as well?

    need Elka shock serviced

I hear you, Robert. I actually swapped emails with George about this back in January but he didn't get back to me and I didn't pursue it. I haven't been riding much so it slipped off my radar again, until now. This time I'm going to get this resolved one way or another! Thanks for the recommendation. I'll try calling George this time instead of email. Bob
