Just did a loop this weekend came back through Menefee. Had a newer T7, KLR and my 990 along for the ride. Used to have the AT they are a solid bike. Mountain riding season is fast approaching good choice to get to the dirt quickly via pavement. Have you experienced any of the suspension issues so many people had with the forks, mine was a sport with the larger tank I just got the fun of dealing with the damn fueltank/pump issues. 😡

    Rotopax vs Armadillo

Some guy tested the MSR bag put gas in it and left it out in the sun for like a week or so with no issues. Based on that if you use the sippy lid you can just squeeze the gas into the tank no hose or funnel needed. Seems to work, I have one but have never needed to use it to date.

The MSR dromadory bags also work well, pack small and are cheap.

    Rotopax vs Armadillo

I have been using a bladder I got from Australia, I like the fact it can carry up to 2.5 gallons if needed, I put in less as the ride dictates. Advantes to me are the fact that you only take up space when needed and when not being used it folds flat to the point of it can remain tied to the inside of a pannier rack etc out of the way for 99% of the trip till needed. You cant do that with a rotopac it takes up the same amount of space all of the time. My .02 I also run a larger tank for bigger rides but thats just me (I have 3 tanks for the 525) stock 4.5Gal Safari 7Gal Acerbis I pretty much run the safari all the the time except for when I do DV trips with known 250 mile loops and I want to explore so the big tank goes on for those trips.

I know permits are required and I think at times there is also a lottery system to get those permits but I am not 100% certain on that for white rim, I do know it exists for some other areas. https://www.nps.gov/cany/planyourvisit/whiterimroad.htm

    Caleb Linden: Vista DRZed 400

Easy rule 1 down in the front is like 3 up in the rear. Usually changing the front is your best bang for the buck but smaller front means less top end speed. I went down 1 in the front on my drz and that was a great compromise for all around dual sport riding.

I Guarantee if the bike is stock he is or will very soon be bottoming the crap out of that, he is almost 100lbs over the threshold.

I am located in Escondido and had a DRZ know the bike very well put bout 15K miles on mine before finally moving onto another bike. I host tech days and actually have some parts and stuff left over from the DRZ days. You are welcome to bring on by some weekend if you want assistance etc with the bike. Best advise I can give you is spend the money now and get it sprung for your weight, from the factory it is set up for a 135lb rider, you exceed that by a large margin. Just the right springs will make it much better ride for you, not even going to talk about valving since your on a budget but that is the next step that will transform any bike. Cost is around 1500 to have it all done right (springs and valves) suspension101 is the go to person.

  22. Most years there were 1 or 2 injuries that required evac but almost always by truck. I can not think of one that was needing life flight that I was involved with. A lot of ribs bruised/cracked but they rode out, same for sprains etc. Mostly it's either broken limb or collar bone that ends their ability to ride. This was over the last 12+ years that I ran SAR for N00Bs I am reflecting on.
  23. We always have recovery vehicle for noobs in Death Valley due to size we tend to have several for coverage radios and sat fone use for comms

    Sleeping bag or blanket?

The one time my down bag got we the foot of the bad was resting against the wall of the tent and I guess condensation or something was taking place and it soaked the bottom 2' of the bag, I could not figure out why I was so cold all night (wool socks) until the Am when I saw the water line. This was camping up by SLO
