All the choppers have landed. Private chopper took a loop in the hills above Lyons Valley Rd in Jamul (McGinty Mtn mabye) on the way back to Gillespie field. https://planefinder.net/flight/N34WH
-
I wonder if that private chopper was hired by the family? Whoever is flying it is following known motorcycle trails. Heading up from Marron Valley toward Dogjunction... spitting off on that dirt side trail now... https://planefinder.net/flight/N34WH Border patrol chopper continues looping last ping location: https://planefinder.net/flight/N4048L

Private chopper N34WH now tracking near hillclimb and pink gate.

Looks like a private chopper owned by Robinson Helicopter just showed up N34WH... it is tracking along the border fence route from west to east.
-
They sure seem to be sweeping the area of reported "last ping" east of East Mesa Detention Center. https://www.google.com/maps/place/32%C2%B035'36.3%22N+116%C2%B053'06.3%22W/@32.588669,-116.9061302,6213m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m5!3m4!1s0x0:0x0!8m2!3d32.59342!4d-116.88508 Nowhere near the pink gate: https://www.google.com/maps/@32.6548468,-116.8070289,3a,60y,208.55h,87.16t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1s9b9ABIVusyUvxYgkPu9CKQ!2e0!7i16384!8i8192 Although the homeland security chopper N3933A did fly over that gnarly hill climb a couple times: https://www.google.com/maps/@32.6220388,-116.7929224,762a,35y,39.15t/data=!3m1!1e3

XRSONLY had a Christmas sale 15% off on the Mikuni TM36 pumper carb, including an adapter for the XR400. I bit the bullet after years of screwing around with my old school, FCR 39 with NO CHOKE. The Mikuni sells for $400 but the Christmas sale brought it down to $340. (I think they do this every year around Christmas, 15% off everything they sell). It's a tight fit. The double push/pull cable run (using stock XR4 throttle) has to be as close to stock position as possible. It started up first kick with the choke on! I am in Tierrasanta at 500 ft elevation. I have a 440 kit with the XRsOnly stainless headers and "cone tip" stainless exhaust. I have an open airbox with a UNI filter. Best jetting for me was Pilot 25, Main 125. Two and a half out on the pilot screw. I left a 3mm gap between the pumper rod and the lever, as the Thumper Talk folks say the XRs don't like a pumper gas squirt right off the top. F***! This thing is a wheelie machine again! I should have done this a loooooong time ago!

FYI, the needle that comes with the XRSONLY Mikuni TM36 is 9DZH6-50 and it was shipped with the clip in the #2 position from the top.

This was a strange one... no choke. Cold starts were rough. Racing carb maybe? It is not the MX. PM me if you want to buy it, cheap. If you are good with carbs you might get it working right. Looks like this (this is not mine, though):

9/14: Plated ride from Escondido.
tvscum replied to rustyshackelford's topic in Informal Local Rides & Who's Going Riding!
You can go up Nate Harrison, down s7, loop around thru Warner Springs and then hit Palomar Divide up and over to come out at Aguanga. But then there's a lot of slab back down to Escondido. -
FYI... down to 158 main/45 pilot

I spent a long time, on and off, trying to re-jet my carb on my XR400 but I could never get rid of the sputtering and spitting at various, mostly high RPMs. Then I began to wonder if the rev limiter inside the CDI module was malfunctioning and cutting out the spark intermittently. I dove into the service manual and started reading about troubleshooting the ignition system. While I was doing that, I discovered a loose ground wire to the coil. Tightened down one bolt at the sputtering is completely gone. Thought I would post in case this might help someone else.
-
I have now set it back to where it was before I added a new exhaust (168 main/45 pilot) and it runs good. Needle is OC EM R. Now, I will go through the normal jetting process to fine tune it. (this is a 440 big bore).

Q U A D R O P H E N I A Nice show! -
Me and my brother are storing this baby out at the Campo truck museum after transporting it out from Illinois. Plan is to get it running and eventual restore. It's been sitting in a garage for 30 years. My great grandfather built the vehicle. Four cylinder Buda engine. 6 volt, positive ground system. It's basically built like a tractor. That green brake fluid can is the gas tank for now: It has no spark but turns over fine. Waiting for the magneto to be rebuilt in Minnesota. Then we will try to start it. Looks like I'll be riding out to Campo for the next few years.

This one is going to remain unrestored but we will get it running and in mechanical order. The Motor Transport Museum is going to be it's home.
