  1. Once you source the removal socket, use an Impact driver and a universal. Not the air gun type of impact, use the type that you strike with a hammer. I'm down on Mussey Grade if you need to borrow one.

    KTM vs. DRZ + YZ

My experience with KTM maintenance: I've got a 2008 530 EXCR. Maintenance cost is OK as long as you don't mind dumping a lot of used synthetic oil into the recycle tanks at Auto Zone. I keep the air filter clean, and the valves are right where they were when I bought it. I had the suspension done last year and that's the first time it was touched. Depending on ride tempo, and your desire to stick with the factory maintenance recommendations, I'll bet the KTM will cost you a bit more to maintain than the two Japanese bikes. On the other hand, you can always do what my friend does, ignore the factory service intervals and ride the piss out of it. His 450 is still going strong. I'll bet 10 bucks that riding a YZ 250 will make you hate your DRZ. Plated KTM 350 EXC-F maybe?
  3. Does the restriction only apply to Anza Borrego Desert State Park, or does it apply to both ABDSP and the Ocotillo Wells State Vehicular Recreation Area? If OWSVRA is also affected, the only remaining areas west of the Salton Sea are Superstition, Plaster City, Painted Gorge, and Yuha Basin. Carrizo Mountain usually closes Jan 1, so that's out as well. There's some good riding in those remaining areas but it's pretty small for a two day program. There's always the east side of the Salton Sea, but I know of other organizations that have held events in that area in the same time frame as the Dash, and not sure how that would be received. I have ridden in the last 4 Dashes and the event has favored DS bikes as opposed to larger adventure bikes. I would love to preserve a small bike aspect, maybe a 150 mile slog through Superstition, Yuha, and Plaster City on day one, and a big bike ride on day two. If we have to relocate to Big Bear, Mojave, or areas east of the Salton Sea to get the space we need, I would commit to the longer travel time.

    Need Railroad ties

How many do you need? I'll be ripping out a play area in the back yard in 2 weeks and I should have at least 14 6" x 6" x 8' pressure treated timbers available. They've been used as a border between grass and rubber mulch. Haven't seen the bottom of them in 14 years. I'll inspect the bottoms to see how viable they are. PM me if you're interested.

    Bicycle advice needed

Arnie, I got a bike for the very same reason you are considering getting one. I ride around on the horse trails by the soccer fields while my son's at practice. I didn't want to spend a ton and I didn't need anything too extreme. I ended up with a hard tail Diamondback, it's got disc brakes, front suspension, and decent Shimano components. It's just a run of the mill recreational trail bike, definately not a race bike but it's fine for my needs. Cost was about $500.00 brand new. I've had it for about 5 years, no problems.

    "Off-road enthusiast" finds missing couple

I was one of the six people who found the couple. I shot the GoPro video you see on NBC7. I gave the interview to 7 because a friend of mine works for the station. My phone has been ringing off the hook since. All six of us played a role in helping to evacuate the woman. I stopped giving interviews and have contacted another member of the group to ask them if they would like to share their stories with the press but for now, I'm done. it was the last thing we expected to find out there. We developed a plan to contact authorities and provide care to the woman while we waited for help to arrive. We all hope she recovers, but unfortunately I feel the loss of her husband may be difficult to overcome. Keep her in your prayers.
  9. Chris, As crazy as this is going to sound, those monkeys on the top of the Rock of Gibraltar will steal everything that isn't tied down. I've been there a few times and those little bastards will grab anything they can, especially if it shines. There is a particularly big male up there that seems to run the show. If you see him, punch him as hard as you can in the face for me. He'll be easy to recognize, he's the one wearing my buddies Revo sunglasses. Have fun, be prepared to wait a while at the border between Spain and Gib, and don't get run over by an airplane as you cross the runway. You'll see. Mike
  10. There is an area east of Borrego Valley Airport, It's north of the dump and is on the opposite side of S22 from Peg Leg Rd. Its on the right side of the S22 as you're heading east. Its outside of ABDSP, but it isn't large enough to attract a lot of people. I learned there, my kids learned there. It has a large open flat area that is pretty hard. Just to the east and south there is a mix of Sand, Hardpack and some gentle ups and downs. Not really that close, but very secluded and once the kids get comfortable on the flats, they can try some of the smaller mounds and trails on the east side of this area.
  11. Randy and the Volunteers, Thanks for another great DD. This was my 5th consecutive Dash! I rode Saturday with Arne C., Arnie F. and for the first time, my son Jackson. We all had a great time. We were hoping to do the entire loop on Saturday but the TE 250 decided that it wasn't going to leave Ocotillo unassisted. I did some slab time to make sure that I could get the Husky trucked back to Butterfield before dark, so I missed riding the western leg. Fuel Injection problems aside, my son had a blast and is looking forward to next year. Not to disrespect any of the previous Saturday dinners, but this one seemed particularly awesome.....maybe it was the 175 miles on the bike and the 70 miles in the truck, who knows? Thanks again! Erik Buell's 185 hp adventure bike

Thread Hijack....I saw your new toy being delivered today on the trailer. Cool!
  13. We did half the CORE for Kids ride two years ago with our kids (two TTR 125s, and a 65cc KTM). Last year we went back out and rode most of the tracks that we didn't cover the first year. If you haven't ridden in that area, you need to do this ride. We really had a great time, the destinations and terrain are awesome, Crawdaddy did a great job on the last C4K, and the North Glamis Campground is great facility. We'll be there!
  14. 200 pounds of unsprung weight and zero pounds of sprung weight. Looks like a case of solidworks abuse.

    Montana Mount - Rev 2

Mine is mounted horizontal as well. With the lower, horizontal profile, I'm less apt to snag it with a boot as I go over the bars.
