    Palomar Divide Saturday November 11th!

Cool! Thanks for the reply. I am going to check some maps to search out a route and then i will run it by you. Always good to find "new/different" areas! Maybe we can ride by the Sutherland Dam on the way in, that is a pretty cool site! Is the Packards you speak of the one right across from 7th st/ave? If so, that is where we enter for the black canyon trail right?

    Palomar Divide Saturday November 11th!

Yes, it is going to happen that weekend. Either on the 11th or the 12th for sure! Thanks for offering "Tour Guide" services, that would be great! Whats your "route"? I have been checking out a bunch on maps and my GPS software, but you never know if there are gates and such. Thanks
  5. I am trying to plot out a trip to do the Palomar Divide. According to some maps i am checking out, it looks like a great route would be to start at the Harrison Grade off of the 76, Connect to Doane Valley Road in the Palomar Mountain State Park (can you ride through it??), then Connect to the Palomar Divide TT and connect that to the Crosley TT and take it to the 79. Looks like a 26 miler. Anyone familiar with this route? I have seen the writeup of similar routes, but none mention whether or not you can drive through the park and connect to Crosley and come out on the 79. Anyone care to share some info? Thanks
  6. Continuing our quest to ride as many of the cool dual sport trails in So Cal as possible, Jay (SDKLR650) and I decided to explore the Black Canyon Trail and the Sutherland Dam this AM! We even made a new friend at the end of the ride! Scared the poop outta me! Here are some pics.

    9/30 ride

Thanks Jay! I had an awesome time as well! It felt awesome getting into the dirt after my 8 year drought! Also, the other guy was NOT a "no show", i just dropped the ball on the phone tag and we never got ahold of each other, we since have though and will be riding soon! Awesome time and cant wait to get out again!!! Thanks to Jay and Michael!
  11. Hey All, Well, i pulled the trigger and picked up a 06 Leftover XR650L yesterday. I decided with all the BS going on with the DMV and such i didnt want to risk converting an R model and getting it pulled so i wanted everything on the up and up. As for the bike, I only took it for a little spin yesterday because it was late when we got home, but i am very happy to have a bike after a 7 year hiatis of riding. About me: 30 years old, live in San Diego, been riding since age 12 or so, used to race hare scrambles back east, havent been on a bike in 7 years or so due to a nasty road bike incident, going to take a little bit to "get back into it" I recently decided on getting back into riding again after borrowing someone decked out XR650L in Baja a few weeks ago and blasting around, i was hooked! This bike will be used for dual sporting trips around so cal and trips to baja! Looking forward to meeting some fellow forum member for some riding trips! Mods coming soon and all will be well documented! Thanks

Just Picked Up A XR650L! Looking to Ride!

Thanks guys! 2 Other Members (Malumute and SDKLR650) and i just did a 150 mile trip from San Diego, through Julian and did part of chariot canyon! I HAD A BLAST and it felt awesome being on a bike again, after 8 years! Mods coming VERY soon: -Larger Tank (4.7G clarke), unless there is a bigger one -Steering Stabilizer -Corbin Seat, the stock one is way too soft for my 260lb butt! -Skidplate Anyway, thats about it, i am looking forward to getting out again soon and riding with you guys! Thanks to SDKLR650 and MALUMUTE for doing the last minute run with me!
  13. Hey Guys As of this AM, i am legal to ride (got my permit that i never renewed from MA)! Woo Hoo! Tomorrow AM i am going to leave Clairemont, head down miramar road to the 67, take the 67 east to the 78 and go about 2 miles +/- east of Julian to a trail i used to do with my Jeep club. Not sure of the name, but it is something on the lines of Pinion Mountain or something like that. Anyway, this will be a casual ride/exploratory misson Anyone interested? If so, email me at: speicher "at" san.rr.com or call at 619.459.7513 Thanks Kevin

Quick Jaunt Tomorrow (sept 30th) AM

Ok Thanks for the tips! Anyone interested in heading there tomorrow AM? I dont want to go alone, but if it ends up that way, i probably wont do much dirt just look around and such. Also, do you guys run GPS units? When in my truck, i usually track and waypoint trails i do and store them on the puter and sometimes share them with friends. Anyone on here share waypoints and such? Thanks

EDITED POST ABOVE There are 2 trailheads off of the 78. One i havent checked out but looks promising on the topo map and the other is called pinion mountain or something like that and is off of the 78 right near the border of the AB state park. If you use GPS software the coords of the trail heads are N33 05.090 W116 34.515 and N33 03.440 W116 25.306

    GPS

I use a Garmin 276c in my truck, and although it is too big and bulky for a bike, i use the Mexican Topo and Street maps from http://www.lbmaps.com/ and they are AWESOME! They can be loaded directly through the Garmin Mapsource software and intergrate great with the Garmin stuff. I also used them on my GPSV before i upgraded to the 276c, very happy with their maps. I have both their Navigator (for cities) and Expeditioner (for dirt and topo). Also, on the bike, i run a Garmin eTrex legend with the handlebar mount and it works perfect!
