  1. Read the following realizing this was my first organized ride with "hard ways". Being a NUBE I didn't quite know what to expect. My main goal was to meet some folks from SDAR. I wasn't able to ride Saturday but I'm not complaining after seeing the pictures of the "rock" section and the hill climbs. I could have walked it fine but the bike would have needed a different rider to make it through. I would have been an anchor on the rest of the crew. I woke up early Sunday and rode up from Morongo Valley, past Pioneer town, and up Burns Canyon. Got there just in time to catch the gang. Unfortunately my only contact was Mike (Hoss). I called him and could tell as soon as he answered that something wasn't right. Poor guy sounded terrible. I didn't have any other phone numbers so I got the tracks for Sunday and took off. The first hard section gave me pause for the rest of the hard sections. I thought everything was hunky-dory until I encountered my first downed tree. I thought to myself "what the heck, they must have known about this"? I stared at that tree wondering what to do then laid the bike over and grunted/wrestled it through. Some smart guy had two more downed trees waiting on that trail. One of the lessons learned: leave the mirrors at home! Not much else to report. Failed to make it up a hill on the second hard section - relegated to easy ways (what a looser). Almost failed to make a hill on an easy section - took three attempts! Took my time the rest of the day on the dirt roads. Enjoyed the weather, scenery, and the benefit of not eating dust. Headed back down to Pioneer town and met the wife for dinner at Pappy and Harriot's. Lucked out with two great bands. Woke up sore this morning - great ride, although I would have loved meeting you all. I'll get a chance on future rides. (those mirrors came home bent and scratched!)
  2. Hail would love to be added to the list (riding Sunday only)
  3. "I'd suggest the convention center to hook up with people" Is there a way to recognize the SDAR group? hung over? good looking? clean bikes? everyone bows as the pass?
  4. I"m a relatively new SDAR member and just signed up for Sunday only. I'd love to meet up and ride with you other SDAR folks on Sunday. Is there going to be a staging area for SDAR? Riding "Pepe Le Mule" (DRZ)
  5. This was the first organized ride I have taken. I'd do it again for the following reasons: met great people saw some cool bikes the Sierra foothills were drop-dead-gorgeous in the spring, there is no other place on earth like Yosemite (that's why there are crowds) Backing up a bit, I was visiting family in northern California and enjoyed some forest roads up there (Mt Shasta in the background): I met Ken at Groveland, which is on Hwy 120 just west of Yosemite, for the two day ride which was organized by Family Off-Road Adventures http://www.familyoffroadadventures.com/ (I have tracks and routes if anyone would like them) There were dirt and paved roads available for each day. Day one converged on a local casino for a nice buffet lunch. Then dirt or paved back to the campground. Day two was into Yosemite for a picnic lunch next to the Merced river. As Ken mentioned the river crossings were plentiful and splendid: The quaint single lane paved country roads were pleasant, unless you went too fast around the blind corners - a GS rider in the campsite next to mine had a head-on with a pickup truck on this road. He wasn't hurt but had to truck his bike home and missed the second day of the ride. One of the vistas on this single lane paved road: I'm sure the highlight for many was the finish at Yosemite. There was snow on the peaks, patches of snow still in the valley. Waterfalls pumping, new growth on the trees, dogwoods blooming, Wow. Two things I didn't like: eating dust following other riders - guess I'll have to get used to this If I take other organized rides? also, the GPS instruction from Family Off-road Adventures wasn't perfect - almost - hopefully they get it dialed before next year.
  6. Hail --I am signed up for Sat only. Yes we could ride togeather at the event. I am going to be doing my own thing on the way up ( camping-exploring ) and will probley ride on my own Sun and start heading home. So we need to get contact infro before the event. Later Ken Ken, I will be coming down from visiting family in Frisco. I plan to get there Friday evening and sit through the GPS class. I'm not sure where I will be staying yet. All the local accommodations have been taken. email me and we can arrange a meeting Friday evening or Saturday morning. tx, Dave hailcisar@sbcglobal.net

    Another Newb - Hi!

Being a newbie also I can't vouch for any of these guys, they sound harmless but maybe that's just some alien mind meld ruse? They want to get us out into the wilderness and take over our minds? or our bikes? That's why we are safe riding DRZ's - who want's those? (well, at least mine, your's looks 'nice') welcome, I"m looking forward to seeing all the upgrades, even the red bull can, Hail

new to site, not to riding

"Hey you guys- don't be gettin all riverside snobbish on us...you're riding idyllwild I want in" Count me in too. I'm in the Fallbrook area and can make it up north in a jiffy (quickly). Kelly, I'm new too and would be open to arranging some rides. I need to go slow cause while you've been riding for 40 years, I've been walking. Rode when I was younger but the bikes were half the weight then, easier to ride. I gotta learn all over. Also a Christian, and married 32 years (got ya beat there) So, let me know when you wanna get out, Hail
  11. Welcome again Hail... this is what we refer to as "a HiJack"... when a nice, pleasant greeeting turns in to "throw bikeslut under the bus"... or in to the chain as the case may be Dang, I'm not sure what to think. 1) "un"technical ways to adjust your forks? 2) not a good idea to be first when pre-rideing a new section? 3) don't get distracted by the scenery when riding new territory? All kidding aside - that dismount couldn't have been graceful. hope you were all right. Thanks for the welcome to everyone, looking forward to riding, Hail
  12. Wow, that quiver looks sweet - as well the souls that partake
  13. "rather than getting a replacement stock footpeg, upgrade to a fastway or something..." "my" footpegs are upgraded, I am looking for the 'rear' left footpeg - maybe then I can take my wife out - and hopefully not drop it 4-5 times!
  14. Just joined, haven't ridden in 40 years, into my second youth! or, wife kicking me out? not sure, but she BOUGHT me the bike, how cool is that - 04 DRZ400s with all the armor, Keihin carb, Renanzco seat, Clark tank, heated grips. In the process of adding side racks, panniers, rear Pelican case, and lower sprokets (like most ol' guys, just want to go slow and steady). (in need of left rear foot peg and 47t rear sproket if anyone local has that) The bike is still too big for me - I need to grow into it. Dropped it 4-5 times the first ride out. Good thing it's a DRZ mule and not some fancy thoroughbred otherwise I'd be too scared to get it scratched.
