I tried to get my taxes wrapped up Monday and found I was missing some information. I'll probably file for an extension with California but if I have the information before Tuesday I want to get them done. Postponing the trip one week for the tax man, same plan otherwise.

In aviation we call those folks "Children of the Magenta". In reference to the generation of pilots that are dependent on the electronics and automation to navigate the plane. Dan, Good information to share. Many users of the GPS constellation don't know much about it or how it can be dangerous to the end user. Blindly following the routes it spits out can be one of them. And it's not just dangerous in the deserts or remote areas of the Southwest. Ask me about the time I used an early version of Waze to avoid some traffic and drove through Gangland Los Angeles. Not fun for my lily white ass in a hot rodded Mini Cooper. I was quite happy to have the extra 50 tq and 30 hp that day! I don't use Waze anymore. Now we should discuss the GPS constellation itself. Since the article Dan posted discussed the dangers of getting lost in our California deserts I would like to share some information regarding the GPS system and how it can relate to another dangerous situation. GPS system outage. The GPS system was developed by and for the Department of Defense. It was designed for an unlimited number of users to be able to benefit from it's implementation and we do. But up until the early 00s the GPS signal was intentionally degraded by the DOD to limit the accuracy of civilian sensors. They have since removed that signal and we can all experience position accuracy of a few meters whenever we like. Or, until the DOD says we like it too much and resets the Selective Availability. The US military runs a huge area of airspace and an incredible amount of land in California and Nevada. Draw a line from Palmdale to Victorville then Northeast to the Nevada border. Now another line from Mammoth Lakes to the Nevada border. Use a marker and shade in the area between your lines. That is all military airspace in the California desert. There is more in Nevada that extends well North of Reno and East into Utah. The area is a hotbed for testing, research, development and training for the military. Because of the civilian reliance on GPS the DOD is required to inform the FAA of all planned GPS system outages. Over the last few years there have been 100s and guess where they are all positioned. Good guess, over the hotbed of military airspace and land in the deserts of the Southwest. Pulling from memory here but there was one planned outage that extended on a radius of 400 miles at 35,000', but might've only been 40 or 50 miles at the surface. Most of the outages seem to be from surface jamming transmitters as the shape of the area is conical with the smallest area at the bottom but others have been inverted. As in the jamming signal is coming from space. Now imagine if you will, it's 7AM and you're about to put kickstands up on a 4 day trip into the desert. Little do you know your route is going to get nasty after the heavy rains last week and the DOD is going to shut down GPS in the area for the next 48 hours between 8AM to 5PM. Should be fun to navigate that magenta line or find a bypass for the washout in the dark. So what am I getting at? Maps and compass. Of all the crap we bring with us on adventure rides those two take up very little space and don't fail. GPS receivers fail, signal blockages occur, we plan for the unexpected by overstuffing our bags with parts, tools and gear. Sure compasses are prone to error by magnetic disturbance and you struggle to read maps, but the power of the earths magnetic field isn't going out and good maps are still usable when wet. Can your GPS say the same? Practice close to home with overland navigation and when it counts it could save your life. Maps, they cost less than that spark plug(s) you've been carrying around for 3 years and take up less space than a magazine.

The YZ from that vintage was known to be a spirited race bike. You upgrading from a TW200 would likely hate it and spend a lot of time and money trying to rein in the performance of the engine. There are also a number of years that had a 4 speed gearbox. I don't know off hand if it is but my 5 speed YZ is not happy cruising above 45 mph. I say keep looking.

Yeah, it's all sad. I remember as a kid turning on ESPN and watching all kinds of motorsports I barely knew existed. To me, NASCAR is the most boring racing league on Earth with Indy a close second. I find the most excitement watching production chassis race cars battling it out on tracks with left AND right turns.

That seems to be the going rate just about everywhere I shop. RMatvmc, Americanmototire, Slavens, etc. are all right there.

That thick paste does look good. Ill have to order a bucket for the next mousse. I also use electrical cable pulling lube from Lowes or Home Depot. Works great and cheap but it is water based and does dry out relatively quickly (a month or so).

I understand. I've done many Friday night to Sunday afternoon trips up there. But I've been there before and you've only seen my photos. To me it IS worth it. Try to get Friday off and off you can't catch the next trip or let's try to setup a weekend trip you can.

Come for the weekend. If you can drive up Friday you'll leave Sunday afternoon content and happy you made the effort.

Make sure you've got a spark arrestor installed then come out and ride anyway. Or just get the OHV sticker. We'll be trail riding.

I ride with a guy that has an XR250 big bore. He swapped on KTM forks and an Ohlins shock. It has a lower seat height and is very capable but as stated kick only. I've never seen him kick it more than a few times.

From the map it looks like you have a stop in Lansing, MI. Do you have business in Chicago or Southern Wisconsin? If not, I would highly recommend going north from Lansing through Michigan's upper peninsula and then into Wisconsin. Probably the best scenery in all the Northern states. I've driven coast to coast 4 times and been almost everywhere in the lower 48. Be happy to offer more ideas for your routing.

Well Dave you were there in 2012. It was really dusty that year but I think you had a 450. A GS is a road bike and 150 a child's bike. Stick with a 450, or comparable size machine, and you'll be fine.

That area is Huell Howser level California Gold. Those are just a few of the not very recent ones from the area I would like to ride. I'm hesitant to upload more to Photobucket after the recent subscription debacle. Here's one of me taken a couple years ago on the Kern Canyon Trail. This trail is one of the best I've ever ridden. Nothing difficult to it other than being on a hillside, just miles of smooth singletrack with incredible views of the canyon and Mountains. It later meets up with the Kern River Trail that drops down to the river's edge and has some technical bits and a little cliff exposure but in the words of Huell, "That's amazing!"

Looking forward to it. I'll put up some photos later so you'll have a good idea of the terrain. I don't own a plated bike and my YZ is only good for 75 miles on its tank. April is about the last chance to ride the low elevation trails up there.

I had those boots too. They too were my favorites of anything I've owned. Once I wore through the soles I extended their life by filling the hole with Shoe Goo. After a few repairs I stopped wearing them and put them on a shelf. I tossed them about a year ago but saved the straps. I came across the straps over the weekend and doubt I'll never use them. If you want them they're yours. Send me pm and I'll send you my address.

I've ridden most of the California border. There are only a few sections in San Diego county you can actually ride along. The desert is ridable until you get to Calexico then it isn't until the imperial dunes. Arizona has the Guadalupe mts and I don't think there is a road directly on the border for the Eastern half of the state. New Mexico is mostly open but once you get to Texas there's will be a lot of private property abutting the Rio Grande. About 18 months ago I flew the entire Texas border for a photo mapping mission. There aren't roads along most of the border. But I've heard Big Bend Park is worth seeing.

I had one. Used it once and never used it again. Sold it off a year or two later. Too hot, too heavy and all the compartments make it very easy to carry more crap than is really needed making it heavier yet. My mid-size High Sierra hydro pack has served me well for almost 10 years.

I would never use that off road, not the Trail 90, the trailer thing attached to the KTM. Hobie gives one example, I can think of a few others that all deal with balance and dynamic handling of a motorcycle. I also have never ridden with big luggage bags and will only carry what I absolutely must have with me (It fits in my backpack or it isn't needed).

There's one in my garage. I haven't ridden it or even started it in a couple years. It is the Lamborghini of dirt bikes. Even as it sits unused I won't even consider selling it. Red line is 12k on the 550 and 12,5k for the 450. From the saddle, the sounds from the wide open throttle bodies between your legs is louder than the exhaust. The first few (hundred) times you rip that throttle the sound alone catches you off guard. Then the tire catches traction...
