I didn't get out until about noon, and had no plan or idea about where I might go. Just geared up and rolled out of the driveway, then hopped onto the freeway headed south. Too much freeway later, I started to formulate a few ideas, and just sort of followed each idea as I entertained it. Off the freeway in El Cajon, south on Jamacha to a road that led me (via a few other roads) to Lyon's Valley road. This is a very nice and scenic road which I'm not sure I have been on before, or at least not in decades. Then I ended up on Japatul road which I took out to Descanso, and took the lefthand turn to Julian, and rode through Cuyamaca. At Julian, I took a little detour out to Farmers road, and then back to the main route down to Santa Ysabel. Then I went over to Mesa Grande and took that route over to Lake Henshaw. Tons of bikers down at Josie's Hideout....looked like a scene from prior times with big Harleys lining both sides of the pavement. I skipped Palomar since I had such a late start, and headed down the grade to Rincon.... or Funner. Not sure funner than what. Certainly not funner than my ride, anyway. Passed by another ghost casino at Valley View, and Lake Wohlford, where the gates were finally opened to the public. Then home again. 160 miles, and a lovely day of temperate, partly cloudy weather. Perfect conditions.

Needed a grocery getter / errand runner so I decided to get a cheap moped. Being 6-1" and 210lbs I needed more cc than just a 50cc. After some r search i ended up buying this instead. Much more "Me" than a new scoot. Picking it up on Saturday.

First Off

Nearing 40k miles, many sets of new rubber, several years of riding, and I've crossed over from the one type of rider to the OTHER type after my first off on pavement 2 weeks ago. Lessons were learned:

1) After pulling the sport bike out of the garage after 6+ months one should be gentle! Rider position and the bike are very different. Give yourself a few hundred miles to get back to form.
2) ATGAT: I was lucky that I was wearing my stuff. I debated leaving off leather as I didn't intend to 'ride hard' but discretion proved the better part of valour and I'll never ride without a full compliment of protection again. This is the most important lesson of the batch and this experience really drove home the importance of a sound compliment of gear. I extend this to protection for the bike as well: sliders, bash plates, bar ends, whatever suits your ride and riding. My bike is beat up but 100% functional which is great! I can replace plastics and leather jackets etc but not body parts or frames etc
3) Pay more attention to road surface, even on well travelled roads! Just a bit of silt/sand (even if not readily visible) on cold tires can become a problem
4) Don't skip leg day! Standing up a gas covered bike while injured can be difficult if you can't properly position yourself. I was able to manage getting under the bike with the help of a passerby who aided me in sliding the bike away from the wheel-side obstructions and thus allowed me to position on the saddle to stand it up, but overall fitness is important for sound riding (and speedy recovery) imo. Never know when you're gonna need to be a hulk.

It was a 'violent' lowside. Left to Right S turn and went down hard when the bike KEPT leaning right, all the way over down to the pavement. In reality I was pushing brand new and still cold tires too hard (read: barely gettin' on it, but still should've given 'em more time and miles to warm and scrub up a bit. c'mon dummy, you know better!) and didn't think of the effect of nearby construction on the road surface. Still had my hands on the clipons as it happened so fast and unexpectedly and my right flank took a hard blast after getting body slammed. I bounced over onto my left hip and tumbled twice (I think) during which I had a heavy head impact and cracked my polycarb shell before gently sliding many feet off the road and out of harms way away from a single other vehicle. All in: bruised ribs, dislocated pinky finger, concussion, minor abrasions here and there but nothing severe.

I consider this a positive experience. I am not happy to have been down, but I am very grateful that things didn't end up any worse. I feel exceptionally lucky and the experience has helped reinforce the reality of what it is we do. I've always been a cognizant and thoughtful rider with a great respect for the machine and the vulnerability we expose ourselves to, but this experience has helped me learn a lot more and strive to be more careful and proactive about my safety and my riding.

I really just wanted to share the experience and highlight the importance of wearing gear and being mentally committed to the ride. That's now my biggest talking point for riding...in this case i could have done things differently yes and I am the one who crashed the bike. I wasn't doing anything that I hadn't done before on new and cold tires, but I still goofed it and i couldve done things differently. If i hadn't had my helmet, gloves, boots, pants, and jacket this would have been a much different 2 weeks. Long story short friends: if you don't protect yourself out here, who will? Even Rossi break bones, sometimes you HAVE to go down. Best to be prepared if you get a choice and like it or not, we ALL get a choice.

Buying Boots, Trying on Motorcycles

Went by Motoworld this week to buy boots. There is a reason they locate the new bikes at the front of the store and accessories at the rear. Sat on a Range of motos from the Ruckus to the KTM Adventure, with the Yamaha SR400 and MT07, Africa Twin thrown in. Even checked out the New Improved Gold Wing ( A-Arm front suspension!).

Had good conversation with Chris, the young easy going salesman. No other customers in the mid-week.

The Africa and Adventures are monsters! I cannot believe there was a time when I rode my 990 up Diablo Drop. The SR400 is a street Single. Could be interested if it had a second cylinder. The MT07 is a compact package. I felt the Ruckus would be the most fun to own!

Looking forward to seeing the new Monkey and Super Cub later in the year.

MotoGP 2018 - Last Lap of Qatar

The 2018 season has started and the first race at Qatar did not disappoint. Dovi (Ducati) and Marquez (Repsol Honda) battled it out and the last lap was a pretty awesome with Marquez overtaking on the last corner and Dovi diving back under! These guys are amazing to watch.

KEY WEST

I am very proud of my daughter because she just finished an internship with the State Department in DC. She took a semester off from UC Davis to do a ten week internship, It took a lot of dedication on her part, (just to be chosen throughout the country to do that internship makes me proud of her) she had to take a bus to and from the State Department during her ten week internship shows me a ton of dedication(in the cold). The contacts she has made are priceless for her career path.

I had the opportunity to celebrate with her dads style and that is on a motorcycle, she met me in Miami and I rented a big pig Harley and we drove down to Key west. It took us over six hours to get down to Key West because we enjoyed stoping in the towns along the way and did our best to take them all in with the short time we had to spend down there. The roads with water on both sides of you take your breath away with all the beauty that you are trying to swallow and take in. The miles of bridge crossing suspended above the water that you are traveling on is just unreal with its beauty alone. I highly recommend that if you ever get the chance to take this trip do because you will not forget it or regret it. I love the small town of Key West and my daughter and I took all that we could take in of it. It is like no other place and truly a one of a kind town. The history alone Key West is amazing from its beginning to Hemingways House to the defenses of our Country during the Cuba blockade. My daughter and I really enjoyed a day at the beach along with touring the Hemingway house ( I highly recommend that if you make it down there). The night life there is just plain fun.

Finally my daughter and I got to meet up with one of our SDAR boys and long riding partner Dan Diego in Naples, we had lunch at a Grill called Parrots and had some good eats. Then Diego took us for a drive through some neighborhoods down to the beach where we talked about his upcoming ride and the rides we did. Then Diego was kind enough to have conversations with my daughter to help guide her on some decisions toward her career path. Well all good things or should I say travels have to come to an end, enjoyed every minute of my time with my daughter and the time I had with a good friend Diego. Enjoy the picks.

Back to School 9/9

I try to get to track school at least once a year. Riding with a coach who can watch what you are doing right and wrong and make fine adjustments goes a long way. This year, I spent a lot of time working on consistent timing points for braking and downshifting before going into a corner, which becomes critical as you start moving faster and faster around the track. In additon to working on braking points, I spent a lot of time trying to relax that inside arm which will bring my upper body position lower and bring the center of gravity down.

California Superbike School gets a new fleet on BMW S1000 RR's every year. They are phenominal machines.

Birthday ride at the track 09/16/17

Well, Saturday was my birthday and I spent most of it on two wheels. Usually I spend it riding trails or dual sport, but this year it was a pavement sort of birthday ride. Started the morning by riding with a friend to Idyllwild, where we had lunch at Uncle B's BBQ. Then back to the house, out of street gear, throw the track outfit into t he truck and head for Apex Racing Center in Perris for an evening session on T Dub Lady's little track bike. It's been 29 years since I have been on a track bike, and I had never even seen this track....or the bike that I was about to ride on it. What could go wrong? Luckily, nothing. I might have not exactly ripped it up, but I had fun.

UC Davis and Daughter Ride

It is not often that I get the chance to have one on one time with my daughter. She just finished her mid-terms at Davis and asked if I would show her Northern CA on my bike. What do you think I said? That be yes. This past Thursday went up the 5 to Davis (that part of the ride sucked) flat and boring. I picked her up at her apartment at 11:30 Friday after her last class for the day and we drove over to Redbluff and started the 36 over to Eureka. I love riding the 36 with all of its bends and beauty that you get to see, my daughter loved the ride and all of the nice bikers we met traveling the 36. Every time I have traveled the 36 I have met some motorcycle enthusiast from another country (this time was no different)that came out to ride the 36, I know why it is so talked about, ride it and you will know what I mean. We finally made it to Eureka for dinner and the weather was perfect in the high 60's. After dinner we headed up the 101 to our camp site for the night Elk Prairie Creek Redwoods. I highly recommend this place and yes we saw plenty of Elk.

We got up the next morning and started down the 101 to the Avenue of Giants, that ride is so cool. I stoped the bike so many times to take pictures and to walk trails with my daughter, we really enjoyed the 33 miles of bliss. We finally made it over to highway 1 and worked our way down to Fort Brag for the night. When you first start the 1 south of the giants it twist its way over to the cost line through tall Redwoods and forest. You can just get lost with the feeling of being free on your bike when you make this ride to the coast. This part of the ride put a big smile on Danielle's face because she had never been down the 1 before. We stayed in Fort Brag for the night, had some great beer at the North Coast Brewery and pizza.

The Next morning we got up early to beautiful clear blue sky's, the coast was in unusual form for this time of year. We took our travel slow down the coast with plenty of stops to take in what our coast has to offer on highway 1. The 1 had plenty of construction going on with plenty of delays but the delays turned out to be a plus for us because we just had more time to view the coat line. We made it to Bodega Bay for lunch then made it through the hills back to the 101 and around the bay back over to Davis. It was a fun time together and Danielle really enjoyed it and has asked me to take her up the coast of Oregon for a week once school lets out. I am up for that and it gives me plenty of time to get some camp sites lined up. Enjoy the pics! I truly enjoyed spending the time with my daughter and sharing with her what I love to do. She has asked me several times to take her to AK for her graduation present when she finishes Davis. She really does have an adventurist heart.

Ducati's SuperSport was taken out of the line-up after diminishing sales and well, they got just plain ugly after a while.

The SS is back! And she is purrrrrty....Better ergonomics over the Pani which will make it a much better day-to-day canyon carver. The exhaust is not routed under the seat like the Pani, so no more cooking your ballz either.

New to Cali, vehicle registration question

Planning on bringing my Van, trailer and one or two motorcycles when I move to Alpine later this year. How soon after I get there can I expect the cops to begin to "suggest" that I get California registrations and tags on my vehicles?

I can imagine the law is something like "within 30 days you must bla bla bla". What I'm wondering is, if I'm driving around town, are the local cops and sheriffs at all interested in my out of state tags if they have been seeing them for weeks? months?
