Riding/N00B Gear Advice

Community Calendar
DSM8

Event details

Gear try on day, bring what you got for others to try out different kind of gear and get some ideas on how to prep for different riding scenarios.
This is for those that know what they are doing to share with those that have no clue.
Mentoring or tormenting the N00Bs, it can go either way

Location

925 Chardonney Way
Escondido,Ca 92029

This is NOT a tech day do not show up expecting to work on your bike. You will be taunted and made fun of, and will have to do a poop patrol of the yard as penance. I have 2 dogs, that can be a lot of poop.

I’m 90% confirmed.
@DSM8, I know you probably don’t have a lot of room but any interest in me bringing my cargo conversion trailer to check out my setup? There were discussion at one point.

@A 2 - Please bring photo's (on your phone).  I'm very interested and have questions, photo's will help.  I'm looking at getting one and doing a minimal build - e-trac, shelf, folding bed/couch, just basic's.

Was intending on bringing gear that I don't use any more, which would either be free or for minimal price.
Is there interest or should I leave it all at home?

Unless @DSM8 is going to be the only other there, you have at least two that would be interested in seeing that trailer, if brought.

Also, I have a really nice shape BMW Rallye 3 Jacket in Euro size 66. No joke some of the best gear you can crash in, lasts a long time, great armor, and if not wearing the same brand you ride bothers - remove the roundel! :)

Euro Size 66 is I think closest to 3XL

if interested, I would be looking to trade for a descent 2XL jacket or another useful gear item.

I say bring it, unless Dave minds.

A few people have asked if I'll be there - I will. I'll have my hard armor and some other gear for noobs to test out.

@shutterrev - I'm bringing some gear to show what I have (not selling) for the other new guys to check out and to compare to other peoples stuff.  I was hoping the experienced riders would bring an array of gear for us Noobs to check out.  I want to see what other people use and their thoughts on it, pro's/con's.

I feel, if you or anyone has stuff to give/trade/sell to us Noobs, bring it - all that much better...win/win for all.  In fact, weren't you the one who brought up the swap meet idea???

People can bring what ever they want if this turns into a sort of garage sale that's great

(note none of my stuff is for sale DO NOT ASK)  😁

Regarding the trailer that might be bit much but if you want to haul it down you can park on the street for people to take a look, I am going another direction since now the wife is interested in joining for the adventure.

Regarding the trailer

Pictures is cool or whatever is clever, I've been interested in these van/trailer adventure vehicle conversions for a while - doubt I'll get one soon, but they sure are nifty.
I'll lay all the stuffs out in the morning and pick what bike I will gypsy-tote it up to north county on :)
Anything I bring will be either free or open for trades so bring your extra things - hobby focused swap meets are the best!

Thanks @DSM8 for putting this on.

Thanks @DSM8 for putting this on.

@shutterrevWe did #vanlife for a few years and it was enjoyable. That said, we started taking our van into some interesting places (lippincott pass, schnebly road etc) where a 2wd van had no business going. We moved to a Jeep WK2 and got a nice tent and have been just as happy with it. I figure a trailer it far better if we just wanted a nicer place to sleep. I'd love pics of @DSM8's trailer as well... but just as a passing fancy. I don't need anymore toy's!

Also, are you one of us "city dwellers" as well?

I'll bring a few things. I'm a TCX fanboi because their wide toebox fits my water ski's so I'll bring them, and I'll probably bring my Rev'it Tornado setup just so people can take a look.

Does anyone want to talk/see road gear? I know both shutter and I have a slew of this stuff, but I'm not going to tote it all up if there isn't any interest.

I live in east county, off the 67 across from San Vincente Reservoir, I think people here think it's  'country-ish' but coming from Oregon it just feels kind of like where I grew up... 'just outside' - a city.

I went to college for media arts, focused on photography, but unfortunately don't get to do (that) what I love for work so I apply it to action sports hobbies. That had me trip and fall in to 4x4 racing with friends, and got involved in that for years as crew/media. We raced KOH for 8 years, did a Baja1000, amazing. In that time I had fallen out of love with riding after a couple of stupid cager-caused street accidents, I still had a street bike but I also had a fun new 4x4 rig and went all in on that for a while. pic below...

While on chase crew for our baja 1k team, driving a chase rig down the Baja peninsula, I crossed paths with a Canadian Media crew several times. They were on these crazy looking motorcycles. On closer inspection I saw BMW roundels, news to me, I had only had used Suzuki's, and a well used ktm up to that point. What the heck are these GS things. They seemed to be having a f'n ball. And I needed to know more! So a couple years later I got a used adv and started putting 2 (heavy) wheels in dirt around end of 2017/2018. I just sold my beloved Jeep above to a fellow forum member, and am glad he will be probably making it even more capable and enjoying it. Because thanks to adv bikes, I have found riding again.

See you Saturday, will be good to get out a bit the weather has been ass for far too long, this was not in the SoCal residency packet. lol

Beautiful country out there for sure. I grew up in a rural area and now live in the city. I love being able to walk places, but often long for a little bit of space.

I came to photography because of motorcycles/travel. I'm not an artsy person so its interesting for me to try it out . I *LOVE* autosports and while I'd rather be behind the wheel, I'll take behind the lens as a close second. Its cool you even got to do that stuff!

Its amazing how people come to autosports in so many varied ways and falling in and out of love with something happens all the time, lol

I still LOVE 4x4, Jeep is just happier with a new home where it's going to be enjoyed haha - and now I can get my suspension Juiced on the bike 👹

we lost power at 1:30am, so I have the generator running and ram cables to te freezers/fridge, SDGE flew a helicopter around for a couple of hours after everything went out but we’ll see when they fix it. Should still be able to make it, just depends on how comfortable my wife is being left with the generator running - hoping the proper pops back on before then :)

edit: I’ll be there - generator should be gtg

I'm going crazy convalescing at home.  I'll be there.  I'll bring my Asterisk knee braces if someone is interested in touch/feel of these things.

Another informative and friendly get together at Dave's.  I'm not a noob, but there's always something to learn when you're surrounded by like minded folks.

Special shout out to @DSM8 and @KTMrad for gear advice and @shutterrev for first aid kit ideas.

Oh, and I got some cool gear....cheap :)

Hey All, was great seeing everyone and meeting a couple new people.

Dave DSM8 started off with a great talk about the 4 major types of riding gear setups, then it was great to hear everyone else's input too.

Thanks to all who showed up and thanks to Dave for hosting !

I had a great time and thought it was a good day !
