New ride...

Recommended Posts

I went and did it last night. Joined the "cult of orange". 04 KTM 450 EXC.

It's relatively stock and not ridden all that much. I definitely need to do the typical mods, need a "tall" seat, probably need new springs up front. Great bike, I'm excited to get it out on the trail. Needs a carb clean first. I have to say, I'm going to get used to the E start too...

Order the brap oil screen bolt NOW. Don't wait until you strip out the stock one like everybody else does. But while you're waiting, remove the rear wheel, remove the rear adjusters (if you can) and clean and anti-seize them.

I'm not kidding.

Inspect the kickstart bolt and the countershaft sprocket bolt to be sure they're tight and/or remove and loctite them.

Spaugh will jump in here soon with even more...

Nice looking ride...too bad it does not have a big blue H on the side.... ;)

E-start is nice=>one of the reasons my XR400r went away.

Yes nice looking bike, looks just like my 520. Yea go by the Brap bolts, when I got my bike used and changed the oil the plug were put in way to tight. I had to chisel to get them out, hey too we are neighbors and need to get together.

Great info, I'll be checking all the listed gotchas. I understand checking the valves is relatively easy as well. I'll want a baseline on that. Looking forward to checking everything out over the weekend...

did i hear wr for sale?

Yes Sir, WR will be for sale shortly. It was idling like crap on the DD so I need to adjust, outside of that all is well. I'll fix the idle issue and post it up...

Ditto on all that. I have the same bike and love it. But it sucks when you are in the middle of nowhere, your battery goes kapoot and you realize your kick starter is gone due a loose bolt. Congrats on the bike and welcome the KTM world.
