Fargoin 6 Posted April 30, 2017 Has anyone used or able to reccomend a Vet in Mexico? My dog is currently in a local animal hospital with an absess in his prostate. He is in pretty rough shape. We were quoted $7k for the reccomended surgery, plus the $2k in fees it has taken to get to this point. Really struggling to figure out a solution. Principally I am against spending $7K on a dog. Emotionally is a different story. If anyone has any insight I would love to hear it.
Czechsix 1 Posted April 30, 2017 Wow, that's pretty high. You might want to check with some other vets, I have one in Oceanside that did a complete splenectomy on a dog I had a while back, ran me around 3 grand all told. Temple Heights Animal hospital, vets name is Dr. Henry Valdez. Greg
Bagstr 287 Posted April 30, 2017 The obvious question is....Wait for it, why Mexico. Do you get your surgery in Mexico?
Fargoin 6 Posted April 30, 2017 Thanks Greg. I will look into it. I have read good things about costs and services for vets in Mexico. But I don't know anyone with first hand experience. There are many things I do differently for my dog than I do for myself. But, if I was without insurance, facing an expensive surgery I would definitely consider getting surgery in Mexico as an option.
Czechsix 1 Posted April 30, 2017 Yep, good luck. One other thing I'll add is that there's an emergency animal clinic in Carlsbad, California Veterinary Specialists. I've been there with my dogs too many times to count, they're one of the most expensive out there. But very capable. Even with that you still have to know when they're upselling you, or trying to drop a procedure on you that might not be necessary. Dr. Grady is pretty good there, along with one or two others. Another thing I'd try before heading south is head out to a small vet in a more rural area, you might do better with that. Good luck to the pup.
StealthDingo 5 Posted May 10, 2017 Veterinary Specialty Hospital in Sorrento Mesa. GREAT Doctors there. Although they can be pricey, they are honest and dont upsell. Its a specialty center for more serious conditions. My dog was diagnosed with thyroid cancer by my normal vet and recommended chemo & radiation to the tune of about $6k. Went to this place and the oncologist confirmed diagnosis and gave me similar options but said honestly that it was a failing mission and he wouldn't do that to a member of his family. Just my 2 cents RIP Dingo. Goodluck to your furry friend
