URGENT! Radical changes for the worse proposed for Calif. OHV program

California State Parks and Governor Brown are proposing radical changes to the Off-Highway Vehicle program in California. They want to end the current program and merge it with the larger Department of Parks and Recreation. The OHV leadership in the state believe the current OHV program works very well and should remain close to how it is now; we feel this proposal would be a big step backward. We are asking you to submit comments using the website www.savecaliforniaohv.org.

Your comments may say that the current self-funded program meets the needs of off-road enthusiasts and that our program will be diluted and get lost if it is merged with State Parks.

State Parks is holding a meeting to answer questions about the proposed changes:

Tuesday, July 19, 2016
6:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m.
Resources Building Auditorium
1416 9th Street
Sacramento, CA 95814

There may be an additional meeting in San Diego in August. SDORC will keep you advised.

Second Chance! CA Department of Parks and Recreation to Hold Open House on the Department’s Organizational Structure Opportunities – This Time in Ontario.

Will Include Discussion on the Future of the Off-Highway Motor Vehicle Recreation Program!

Second Open House will be August 11!

On the evening of August 11 the California Department of Parks and Recreation will hold an open house in Ontario to discuss the Department’s Organizational Structure Opportunities – including a discussion about how to move forward with the Off-Highway Motor Vehicle Recreation (OHMVR) Program.  A California State Parks Transformation Team has been tasked with “developing and leading State Parks in executing structural and sustainable reforms…”  As part of this process a July 2016 memo proposes:

“The Off-Highway Motor Vehicle Recreation Program was established as a division in 1982. More recently, in 2012, the Department of Boating and Waterways was merged with the department. The current organizational structure separates these important recreation services from the rest of the services provided by the department. Visitors would be better served by fully integrating these services into the rest of the department.”

The OHMVR Division currently is a separate division successfully providing OHV recreation, both on State Vehicular Recreation Areas and through facilitating motorized access on federal public lands.  It is important that these successes continue.  There is concern that merging the OHMVR Division with the rest of the department may take the focus off of providing OHV access and may re-direct user fees to other efforts.

Meeting details:
Tuesday, August 11
6:00 PM - 9:00 PM
Double Tree Hotel by Hilton Ontario Airport
222 N. Vineyard Avenue
Ontario, CA 91764-4431
