this is what the stock one looks like... on, pri and reserve

most other "manual" petcocks will have on, off and reserve...

hope that helps

and don't ever question me again

kidding

It's got On, Off, and Reserve so it looks like that has already been done. Thank you so much!

That said, I'm guessing the fuel should be "off" for tank removal since the vacuum petcock is gone?

Perfect. Thanks guys!

Haven't worked on my own bike/car/anything since I sold my YZ125 and moved to SD 12 years ago. Feels good to get my hands dirty again!

Alright, Devols are on. Petcock is definitely not the stock vacuum version. All good to go there!

New question!

My airbox doesn't have the traditional 3x3 mod, but I think it's one y'all might be familiar with. The top of the airbox is normal, but on the side there are 6 holes. It looks like they were pre-existing but had some kind of plastic mesh or webbing over them which has since been cut out. I'd guess total area of the removed plastic (or mesh) is 6 square inches (as opposed to the 9 created by the 3x3). When I purchased the bike I was told that this is an alternative to the full 3x3 and the engine was properly jetted after these changes were made.

Bike runs fine. I'm just wondering if I should stick with this setup or:

1. Tape up the holes, put a proper 3x3 up top and re-jet.

2. Leave the holes, put a smaller hole up top (1.75x1.75), and re-jet.

3. Leave it all as-is. 6 square inches is pretty close to 9 and the difference isn't worth the re-jetting (which I would likely pay to have done).

Grazie!

if it's running fine, no need to re-jet. Unless you REALLY like to play around with carbs...If you tape the holes, and rejet to "burned" specs, the results are tried and true.

If the PO properly jetting for the airbox mods he did, it is most likely fine.

that's my 3 cents, and worth every penny

Perfect. I figure I'll leave it be and at some point if I'm starving for more power I'll throw an exhaust on, open it up 3x3 proper, and re-jet it all at once.

ok- while we are talking pipes

and I may in the minority here

the DRZ is quiet for a reason; most people LIKE quiet bikes... most VOTERS like quiet bikes.

If it is for closed course competition (and seriously; how many DRZs are the bike of choice for racing?) go ahead and get a free flowing pipe for the additional 3 horsepower

for trails, street, around campgrounds, your neighborhood, your freeways, etc.... leave it stock... if You want JUST A LITTLE more free-breathing exhaust, maybe try to eliminate the peashooter portion of the can. Don't lose the spark arrestor in the process though.

Yeah, more or less my same thoughts. I live in Encinitas. I don't want to fire that thing up in the garage of my townhouse if it's a monster.

From what I've heard/read the cost/noise isn't worth the small gain.

Best bet is to try and find an e model headpipe since that's where the restrictions at. If you want more noise only than go ahead and drill out stock exhaust tip. I have full on open exhaust cams and fcr carb but my reasoning is I planned on having some supermoto wheels by now just hasn't happened yet. And yes my bike is loud and probably annoying to others even though no ones said anything. Ill tell you one thing though, don't have to watch for cars merging over into my lane anymore without seeing me cause now that can hear me lol. I do run a spark arrestor though...

back on the air box... realize the 3x3 is the TOTAL air intake area... the smaller holes on the side PLUS the existing top hole/snorkel may do the same thing. = 9 sq in

but my basic premise remains... if the bike is running well, don't go in there

if you REALLY want to start messing with carbs, you can come install my new FCR

Yes sir, that's the plan. I'll leave the airbox as-is.

If anyone has an E header they'd like to sell I'd be interested!

Oh I've yelled multiple times riding behind you, you must have just not heard me. Kidding yours isn't that bad.

Anyone going to be in Encinitas with a 24mm socket and decent socket wrench anytime soon?

The last project on my list is swapping out this 49T sprocket for a 47T sprocket and I don't have the tools to remove the rear axle.

I also MIGHT need a link or two removed from the chain.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks guys!

A crescent wrench will do it; if you don't have one that large, knock on some doors in the neighborhood. Somebody will. Chain tools are a different story, and you'll want some practice. After you determine length you need, I'll be in north county next week for a gig, and can break your chain for you

Oh...don't remove "one link"...that won't work so well. If you had adjustment available with the 15-49, and you're going 14-47, you should be fine. Hard to tell unless I know how many links in the chain

Okay. I'm going to 15-47 so I might be okay. I've got a little room to adjust already with 15-49.

I've got a crescent wrench barely large enough. It might be sufficient if I had the strength of 5 men!

The extra holes on the air box can cause an acceleration delay at the main slide diaphram.

The whole design of the air filter box is to cause a slight restriction from ambient air pressure.. And to hold in the extra noise from the carb.

So if its a slug off the line try taping up the holes.

All of your help has been awesome! Over the past couple of weeks I've been knocking out one project at a time and finally have the bike where I want it thanks to y'all (and YouTube).

Much appreciated and I'll see you guys in the informal ride forum!

Thank you!

Already did one ride up in the San Marcos Hills. Fun, technical area. Headed out to Joshua Tree in a couple weeks to revisit the old stomping grounds as well. =)
