Hey guys and some gals maybe,

Just bought a crf250l about two weeks ago and am spazzing out about it. Cant wait to get off road instead of just watching all these youtube videos about it. I wanted to go on the noob ride this weekend but its not going to work out. Ill be at the first one I can make it to though. I have a couple questions:

(1) how critical is it that I get a more substantial radiator guard and skid plate on my bike before going on some noob rides?

(2) what is the minimum level of recommended protective gear? Of course I have a helmet (and gloves), and am going to soon buy boots and some pants.

Looking forward to meeting some of you on the trails. Thanks.

1) most n00b rides not needed...all intermediate rides; needed

2)boots, helmet, goggles and gloves is bare minimum- knee protection, elbow and torso next...leatt brace and bubble wrap is the final level

That Honda should be a good bike, most noob rides won't put you into any places where a skid plate should be required. Radiator guards, could need those at any time. Sometimes a simple tipover can break a radiator.

Get a set of knee and elbow pads, if you shop around you can get them for $20 or so. Well worth it, ask around!

Welcome to the group, see you on the trail.

Welcome to the forum. Always include knee guards and good off road boots in your wardrobe for any ride.

Re: skid plates

I'm unfamiliar with the stock engine protection of the CRF250L. If it has some type of plastic guard for engine protection from kicked up road debris you'll be ok for quite awhile. If there's nothing but frame tubes and air between your engine and the front tire you'll want something in there before you go dirt roading. The reason I say this is I was on a newb ride years ago and a XR650L took a rock and punctured the front of the stator cover on Palomar Mt. Rd. newb ride newb road newb lesson learned.

I use a plastic skid plate but most folks use aluminum. Use whichever fits your preference.

Welcome meatmord. Good to see you here.

Ken S may be putting on a noob ride in about four weeks.

Hopefully he puts it on at the local dirt race track

Be safe out there.

Awesome, thanks. Just ordered an aluminum one.

Welcome! I have the same bike if you ever have any questions. I've beat the tar out of mine and have over 12k miles on it and she's still running great! Oh and something else you might not have thought about is the shifter! The stock shifter on those bikes are actually made out of Play-Doh. I put a stock folding tip shifter from a CRF150R on mine and haven't bent it once.

Nice! Yea I have read that I should do that. So far I've given her a new exhaust system, 13t front sprocket, EJK, and done the air box mod. Those mods have given her a bit more scoot, which I am pleased with. tomorrow I am putting a skid plate and radiator guard on, as well as hand guards. Love it all.
