2013 Desert Assassins Rip to the Tip tv show

Recommended Posts

For those of us not riding baja this weekend, here is a video of the 2013 Rip to the Tip put on by the Desert Assassins. If you've been to Just Gas Tanks / The Enduro Shop you may recognize one of the guys towards the end of the movie.

As an aside: I posted some baja info/pics/vids in the Member's Only - Special Trails & Destinations forum. Please keep all replies specific to that thread in the appropriate forum.

Thinking aloud.. if one were to undertake a personal 'Rip to the Tip' how would YOU do it?

-Would you jump on the Desert Assassin's ride,

-would you hire a private tour guide,

-would you go with a group of buddies and a chase truck or

-would you do it unsupported with some friends?

What extra spares would you bring on / acquire before such a ride?

Air filters,

wheel bearings,

axle nut,

countershaft seal,

countershaft nut,

levers,

oil & filter,

bib mousse,

extra gps,

-if supported

extra wheels,

oil and filter,

coolant,

brake fluid,

clutch fluid (for hydraulic clutches)

??

When are we going?

Before (or actually for) my 30th birthday I want to do a peninsula run. I have thought about converting an old ambulance or short school bus into a possible chase truck/moto hauler. Or, just doing as my friend from a different baja ride/race and rent a typical chevy van from some small San Diego rental company, rip the seats out and haul your moto / camp in it 800 miles around baja hoping the rental company won't notice! Maybe somebody wants to loan me their Sprinter van lol??

You can get a tour guide to take you south and they would provide the chase truck / haul the bikes back north too like the video below. One benefit of a guide is they know all the sick trails / know of recent rains or fences that may compromise these trails. The US based companies (I believe all three are based in North County San Diego) that I'm familiar with are Baja Bound Moto (Tim Morton who posts on ADVrider / Thumpertalk often), Chris Haines (the video below) and Enduro360 (Chilly White who I ran into on my last baja trip). I met Klaus from Chris Haines' tours at Ramona's / Sawmill and rode back to Tecate with him once. This is a fun video with some good drone baja footage.

Riders could fly family / wives to Cabo and spend time there for vacation after the ride (this way you can claim it's family time and get them involved and not even have to use any "hall passes" for the ride part!!). If there was a chase truck, a couple guys could drive the bikes back. A couple years back some SDAR guys were savages and rode to Cabo AND back!! While this video isn't those guys, it's still pretty cool too.

You sir will be making one hell of an entrance. Just out of curiosity, approximately how much might it cost to charter such a flight to Cabo? (and/or return flight)

Add paramedic to the list...

Great call. I see that you were a wildland firefighter and smokejumper - awesome, post some pics if you have any I'd love to see them. Being that the club is based in San Diego, we have a few ex-military guys with prehospital medical training and a few fire/leo members as well. I know for certain that a few SDAR guys ride with quality medic bags (including one interested rider who posted earlier in this thread. I'm an EMT and planning to be in Paramedic school next year! I've done some US & Baja moto medic/sweep riding and looking to do more. Here is a pic of sweep riding beach donuts fun in San Quintin after the first Baja Rally was successfully completed. Sweep is a dusty job but I find it fun. Hodnettjj helps with LESAR for the AMA D38 races and they respond to lots of calls there.

I watched the Chasing Summer series...twice...awesome video footage. Fired up for another baja run. Goofy...here are a few pics for ya. Too bad digital cameras really weren't around in the early 90's. Saw so much uninhabited, beautiful parts of our country...

Great pics Mikey777! Well, when you want to see some uninhabited, beautiful parts of baja again, let me know and let's ride!

The Chasing Summer series is sick. I like that they took pretty stock bikes (with stock exhausts even) and rode the piss out of them the whole time. They definitely went light on gear but ultimately they probably had a support truck of some sort or at least they had the 3rd cameraman bike. Bib Mousse's eliminate the need for extra tubes, tire irons and air pump. On a long trip such as a Cabo run, there are a lot of opportunities for flats (that withstanding, I've seen a Cabo run report here on SDAR where the group made it down and back without any flats!). The Chris Haines video I posted above is another fun video if you haven't watched that one yet.

One Pete's recent weeklong baja excursion he lost the rear axle nut and snail chain adjuster. I've seen a few people who lost their rear axle nuts while riding - it might not be a bad part to throw in the bag (or at minimum a chase vehicle) for a long trip.

On a slight aside note:

I came across a thread on Expedition Portal where a guy bought a used wheelchair van as his moto hauler - that is an amazing idea because they have tall roofs and full length doors to allow easy entrance/egress of motos into the van. Typically they are based on the 15 passenger Ford Econoline gas vans so you can fit 3 bikes inside, still have the two driver/front passenger buckets AND fit a second row bench seat! That would make one hell of a chase vehicle towing a trailer for the return trip if it's a big group.
