Camp, Ride & Plant Tree for TREE 11/15-16

Recommended Posts

November 15-16....Linda (Duanes wife) and some of her family will come out to meet us at Butterfield Ranch on Saturday November 15. I think Linda will spend the night.

Let's plan on planting the Olive Tree and have a small ceremony to honor Duane at around 11am...we'll try to have a plaque made in time also. Hopefully Tracy can do his thing for Tree.

Then people can go ride or whatever. Maybe we should either plan a ride Saturday afternoon or Sunday morning ?

We could have a cookout Saturday evening ?

Let's hear your ideas.

I either need to grab a bed in someone's trailer or we can get a cabin and share.

We can make this a good SDAR camp out and ride !

Also...I'd like some input on what to say on plaque besides "in memory of Duane "Tree" Swainston.....thanks !

I didn't have the pleasure of meeting "Tree" but from all the nice times people have shared with him I'm guessing I would have gotten along with him. I Really like the tree planting idea, I'll plan on being out there. I have the weekend free and will most likely ride out on the xr4 for two nights of camping. (Might boondock it on friday night) tenting it in butterfield sat night.

I want to thank Mike ADVBum for taking the lead for researching trees and calling nurseries.

I'd really like to make this, as I was out of town for his service at Foothills.

(even if it is just for the day....maybe camp?)...

Aiming for a Saturday arrival and overnight with the family. Probably bring a little bike in the truck and rent a cabin.

How big is this tree? Is this something for which we should get a little backhoe or a skid steer?

24" box? 36?

I believe we have a member who might be able to help with that.

I think he mentioned 24X24, backhoe would help. I can operate it if needed, sold mine.

Sorry I did not get back sooner. I had other things going and I wanted to talk to Mr Gray out at Butterfield before I responded.

Yes the tree is an Olive tree in a 24" box. This tree was picked by the specialist and general consensus of the SDAR/ Family members. Mr Gray(butterfield) also liked the selection.

Mr Gray does not want us to use a backhoe. He is picking out several spots that have irrigation and does not want us to destroy it. I have a jackhammer with a digging spade that I will bring with the tree.

I am thinking I will head out Fri night so that the tree can be there and get an early start Sat getting it in the ground.

Will we be riding Sat or Sun?

Sounds good, thanks.

Be aware that olive trees are drought-tolerant *once established*. At first, they need a LOT of water- many deep soakings over a period of months.

Damn near killed mine off before I understood that.

Mike...I talked to Douglas at Butterfield also....so we're all set for the tree....just have to pick a spot when we get there.

As far as riding.....I think make the ride on Sunday ? Its all up to you all who come out.

I'm dealing with final days with my dog Cody and spending every minute with him...so no time to get my 950 ready. I think Cody won't be around anymore by that weekend so the only way I'll ride is if Carguy hasn't sold his 525 by then....he offered to let me ride it. If Cody still happens to be around...he'll be with me so I won't ride.

Either way...if I'm not riding I can be the bike recovery vehicle if necessary.

Since Mike is bringing a jack hammer, I will leave mine home and just bring a shovel to lean on.

We will head out Friday night after work.

I am in, I road sweep with Tree and meet him several times and discussed Baja. He was a very nice man and a great rider at that. I will miss that big smile of his. He will live on with us who knew him as Tree. I like to think of him as Big Man!

Reminder...its in the works.....Tree's family is coming...plaque being made....tree will be picked out by Mike ADVbum...

Can someone offer to lead a ride on Sunday if people want to go riding ? And/or you can ride Saturday afternoon also.

I most likely won't be able to ride.

I'm happy to lead an easy ride, some sand experience is a big bonus. Route TBD, maybe an early loop up Rodriguez and down into Blair Valley, then head on down to Vallecito wash, up Canyon Sin Nombre, through west Dolomite and into Ocotillo for lunch. Then Dos Cabezas, Carrizo Canyon, or Indian Gorge on the way back. Happy to scale the difficulty up or down depending on riders, there are lots of bailouts to the S2 if people need to head back early (my wife and I are staying 'til Monday).

Is there an established time for the tree planting/ceremony on Sat morning? I'll be there regardless but I'm unable to not stay/ride due to other commitments.

(Heading out to Glamis North Resort after the dedication/ceremony to meet with them about the CORE 4 Kids fundraiser in Jan. So I'll be stay there Sat/ride there Sunday morning)
