I clicked the button to like a post and got this message:

"You have reached your quota of positive votes for the day"

This is the first time I've ever tried to 'like' anything on the SDAR Forums.

Yes, I have tried it a few times, but it has never worked. :hmmph:

Good catch Strega.

From my understanding, SDAR has never had the ability to "Like" posts. This was briefly discussed when the forum software was updated several months back. It was decided that there would be no Likes.

I for one much prefer that SDAR disallows Likes

(just my personal preference). Some members occasionally comment "Like!" when replying to a post they enjoy which is akin to the Like a Post feature you described

On the other hand...

I think a "like" button creates an additional opportunity to engage with members and the forum in general.

I further appreciate it's limited to positive reinforcement. It makes it much easier to be kind and indicate appreciation for the views of another member.

I also realize it ain't my forum, it is owned and managed by Randy, and he gets to decide.

(BTW- I like Tim's post :smile_anim: )

I agree that it is an additional opportunity for engagement and do like (no pun) that it is exclusively positive reinforcement (opposed to thumbs up/down or a rating system).

However I disagree that it would be a positive addition for SDAR. I think that on the aggregate, it limits quality communication and the sharing of reality-based knowledge.

The Like feature is limited in that it is inherently one-way communication and doesn't allow the poster to reply to the positive sentiment. Furthermore, it doesn't allow an additional poster to comment on the positive sentiment of thr Liker (beyond adding another Like).

A quick look at how adolescents and teenagers (or other people newly introduced to social media) use the Like function will quickly show that little actual communication occurs, let alone intelligent discussion. I am not envious of American youth and the extreme pressures of the social media popularity contest (fueled by the Like function) which they face. I'm not saying that directly applies here but why change something that has been working great all this time?

Also, SDAR doesn't have the raw membership to support both Likes and commenting. I believe SDAR has a "homey" feel with local membership and we should be encouraging people to post their appreciation through supportive, engaging replies - not encouraging Likes. Quality posts deserve our appreciation, Reply don't Like!

ps: this enjoyable discussion would never have occured if the OP had been allowed to Like...

pss: Let's Ride!!

I have invoicing and bookkeeping to do- in other words, sitting at the computer.

I enjoy the distraction, and any chance to scoff at Tim.

I guess my point is.... If the button is there it should work....

If we aren't going to use it... remove the button...

It creates confusion and looks like the site is not working properly...

I'd "like" your post, but the button doesn't work. :coolio:

Better remove all of them then:

Twitter

Google+

Digg

Reddit

Del.icio.us

StumpleUpon

Facebook

etc...

However, social media promotes your site, why not have them ALL work, including the Like Button on posts.
