Current Communication Equipment

Recommended Posts

A couple years back someone here (Dig Dug maybe?) gave me a page with a bunch of the local repeaters on it, and all the tones needed to use them. I can't find it anymore, does anyone have a copy they could post? It would probably be good info for everyone with a radio to have.

I'm thinking of getting this Wolfman Enduro Pocket or similar product. Will a Boafeng or Yaesu handheld fit in such a bag (it's fine of the antenna sticks out)?

Just curious as I don't own a radio yet so it's hard to judge.

Just measured my smallest UV-5R(I have 4, don't ask) and its a hair over 8 inches long with the antenna.......so if you can have the antenna sticking out I guess it'd be ok?

It might..but...

In the radio world, there are vertically and horizontally polarized antennas, and the 2m are vertically polarized. Having the antenna horizontally polarized and close to the bike may cost you on range- in theory, it will cost a lot.

Practically, who knows?

It's not something I'd do.

I will say that in DV last year, I had my radio in my Wolfman Enduro tank bag with just the antenna sticking out horizontally. There were several times that people around me were responding to people further up the trail that I couldn't hear. It may have been a higher quality antenna, or better orientation, or both. Something caused the difference in reception.

Sorry I missed this-

My radios are programmed with Dug's freqs, and I'm happy to clone yours for you- if yours has the mars/cap mod. But you'd need to come down to The Big City to get it done.

Highly recommend you keep the radio on your body, as a safety device if you're separated from the bike, or need to step away from the bike but still need to be able communicate.

I keep my radio in my backpack / Ogio vest, with a PTT on the handlebars and a spare velco PTT attached to the front of the pack. So (1) the radio is always with me and (2) all I need to do is plug the harness into the spare PTT on my chest if I need to talk while off the bike.

Yeah mine is in my backpack. But I haven't installed the new helmet kit yet so it stays off unless I need to use it.

Like - going to garage right now to put an extra on my pack. I heard stories of completing the circuit on the plug with a finger after a Pterodactyl attack but I like the extra switch option.

I've heard of the wet finger trick but have never been able to duplicate. Recommend you attach to pack strap so you can get to it without taking the pack off. Comes in handy when you're off the bike midway up a hill, telling guys which lines up to not take :tired:

I've never been able to duplicate the wet finger trick on demand- but I've seen it happen many times.

I'm finally trying to take on this project that is radio communications. I remember this thread, it took a bit of searching to find it. I wanted to give it a bump and say thanks to everyone's contributions to the topic. I just started reading these cliff notes.

In reference to this whole thread, This code will get you 15% off rugged radio.

MOTO15

Their body harnesses are top notch and definitely worth the investment.
