Big Bear Lake to Pioneertown

Recommended Posts

I know I have more exploring to do in southern California before going south to Baja maybe I need different riding partners. Great reporting Jeff and very nice pictures proves to me there is as much fun to be had right in our backyard.

man...glad you got out to enjoy that weather up there!!!

LOOKS AMAZING, good pix! also, now i know a trip from BB City, other than a "where's that go?" adventure!! SWEET!!

B)...YOUR ride looked REALLY fun!

note: we were in Big Bear this weekend too...but more family time than "out and about" time *sigh*

which ended up being a 4X4 trip two days in a row..:good:

day 1-3N03, into 3N03A(*Horse Thief Flats), for lunch and grandpa's first "real" 4X4 adventure(*he's 82)he LOVED it.

day 2-3N16/61 up into 3N10(*John Bull trail)...into Holcomb Valley area.

Used to be able to go (or down) Pipes Canyon from Hwy 38 to Pioneer Town. Don't know if it's still possible but it was a great trail.

I've read that there is now a gate and landowners with guns preventing the Hwy 38->Pipes Canyon->Pioneertown trip, but i haven't verified this to be true, nor do i wish to test anyone's aim. Looks like a sweet route on google earth.

Jeff, great post. I remembered seeing a guy ride a tw200 from Desert Hot Springs to Big Bear and back. How accessible is the route you took in winter?

Anybody know if you could connect Pioneertown or the adjacent areas to Salton City via dirt?

(possible mega loop on my mind)

Don't really know... the top (cactus flats OHV) is at 6000 feet and Pioneertown is at 4000ft if that helps.

Good mornin' folks...

I know this is an old thread... (thread resurrection!)
But I need to see about confirming "Pipes Road" and it being passable.

We'll be going from Pioneer Town, towards Big Bear in Jeeps. Taking some of the trails I've ridden on my dirt bike (from Julian to Las Vegas) which took us through Pioneer Town up to the 247 (via Rattlesnake Canyon). Yet, we're thinking of taking Pipes Rd or Burns Canyon (which I hear is the better of the two - or more passable).

Anyone with more recent knowledge of the two paths?? Any info on where to look/read would be helpful.

Hey JAT, Pipes Canyon does not allow vehicle traffic between Big Bear Hwy 38 and Pioneertown. You can enter from the 38 and ride/drive past Onyx Mtn down the hill but will come upon a locked gate. You can start from Pioneertown and head up but will encounter a gate and then it turns into either wilderness or private property. Check the thread below for more info:

Burns Canyon is totally passable in a Jeep but offers two spinoffs (one black diamond and one blue diamond) if you're so inclined. I rode from Pioneertown to Big Bear with my buddy who hadn't ridden in a while, at night, on a DR650.

SDAR - big bear to yucca a goofy adventure/

I had been debating my next upcoming day ride.. thanks to you reposting about Big Bear, I now have the itch to head back up!
