    Looking for a used 500 exc f - questions

I would definitely look for one that has been desmogged, has a tune, an exhuast, and is dialed in. There's a $1000 worth of upgrades right there that the seller isn't going to get back. Other nice to haves would be a Rekluse, oversized tank, and a good seat. Again, those are parts the owner isn't going to recoup much of their investment on. Have you decided on a year / price point?

    SPOT / INREACH Tracking Link

I've got approx 1000 miles of riding since the lights on my Spot3 started blinking red in early March. I carry two sets of back up AAA batteries. The point being, there is significant life left in the batteries even when the Spot starts blinking red.

Suspension Sag With / Without Gear

If you are doing a one nighter, and the terrain is not overly technical, there is probably not need to adjust sag for that (assuming minimal weight of stuff needed to get through one night). When you are packing for multiple days and adding in some technical up hills sections, then it's very necessary.
  6. Nice trip, Jon. Did you follow a GPS track or just wing it was California Trail maps?. Be glad you missed that storm. The great bomb cyclone of 2019.... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/March_2019_North_American_blizzard

Suspension Sag With / Without Gear

I adjust mine based on how much I have packed. I use a scale. When I did the Arizona Peace Trail a few weeks ago with a couple buds, I advised them to adjust their sag because we were carrying 7 days worth of stuff on small bikes. One of them didn't and it had a very negative affect on his bike handling. There were section he just could not get up because the bike would want to wheelie too easily. With proper sag setting, he wouldn't have had an issue and he would have had more fun in the techincal sections were encountered. It's that important.
  10. Speaking of those clamps...what size are they?? I need to order some. Thanks, Bags (or whoever answers my qusetion)..

    What's Open?

I rode yesterday with my kids. Parked on the south side of 78 in Ocotillo Wells and rode to Carrizo Gorge, Plaster City, Superstition, and beyond. Did 100 miles and had a blast. Yes, Ocotillo Wells OHV is closed, but in case you don't know, the actual OHV park is only north of the 78....everything on the south side of the highway is open.

GPS Phone APP's Android or iPhone for 2020

Gaia (I'm sure others apps do as well) allows you to choose either way with one click. Super easy...

GPS Phone APP's Android or iPhone for 2020

Gov, yes, they are just standard GPX files. You can download them to your MacBook etc. and then into Basecamp...if you want. But, the one of the real advantages of going this route (phone / gps app) is that you won't need BaseCamp anymore...it's antiquated, cumbersome, slow, etc, compared to a phone and an app.

    Phone based gps help!

The quad lock looks nice but they don't make one specifically for the Kyocera Duraforce as far as I can tell. But if are using your primary phone, and your phone is of more recent vintage, it might be a good option. Mikey, did you see how you have to push down the lever before turning and unlocking the phone from the mount. It's like a level II holster. But I agree with Bags about being able to tether the phone would be a nice option. It would be super easy for them to add a little tether tab on the case itself.

    Street Tires for a 450 ???

Shinko 244. I used this to ride across Utah 2 years ago. 600 miles of dirt and 400 miles of slab. I was really surprised at how well they performed on and off road. And priced right. https://www.motosport.com/product/?acctid=21700000001662562&adgroupid=64221936704&campaignid=1469175523&cc=us&channel=online&creative=283772275637&device=c&ds_s_inventory_feed_id=97700000007265446{ifpla:&ds_s_kwgid=58700005280401191&dskeywordid=92700046695701289&dsproductgroupid=475649667036&gclid=CjwKCAjw95D0BRBFEiwAcO1KDJQGW3zRCxpq6DjE-M24gavI9dYaZAP0at-PKCB-r5U5m6oCVi98DRoCsdwQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds&key=Shinko-Dual-Sport-244-Tire-Combo&lid=92700046695701289&locationid={loc_phyiscal_ms}&matchtype=&merchid=348908&mrkgadid=3303113957&mrkgbflag=0&mrkgcat=dirtbiketires&mrkgcl=500&mrkgen=gpla&network=g&prodctry=US&prodlang=en&product_id=SHT001N-X001-Y001&pssource=true&segment=badger&storeid={product_store_id}&targetid=aud-297362346885:pla-475649667036&variant=SHT001N-X001-Y001

    Phone based gps help!

Mikey, I was just checking out the Back Country site. Are you able to build routes on the web site and auto sync to phone? The basic web site doesn't offer much. Maybe it's available for paid subscribers?

    Phone based gps help!

It's super easy. You can do it right on your phone or on a lap top. Zoom in to where you want to start, click "create route" and build from there. Gaia (and others I'm sure) have the "snap to" feature, which automatically follows the trail and builds the tract. So start at one point, click at the next intersection, and the route will bend to the trail automatically. No more click, click, click every inch or so to build a route. If you build the route on your lap top (and vice versus) it automatically syncs to your phone, so no more plugging a GPS into your computer, loading the tracks from your computer into Basecamp, and then from Basecamp into your GPS.

    Phone based gps help!

I contacted Statmount and asked about a 1" Ram ball mount option. They said thanks for the idea and they are going start looking at it. They offered my a 15% discount code for the suggestion. I'm considering it...I really like the way the phone slides in an out easily. Chris...I really don't see a draw back to this set up right now. One of the best things is the simplicity. No more Basecamp...

    Phone based gps help!

Bending that top mount point was key. I would have done exactly the same thing. The mount the Jim posted above looks really nice. I sent them a message to see if they have a 1" ball mount option

    Phone based gps help!

I like the looks of that mount, Mike. Let me know asap what you think when you get it. Also, I'll note that I always try to have two forms of retention, usually a tether of sorts, with everything I pack on my bike; GPS, phone, tool bags, etc. Tethering a phone is problematic so what I do is take industrial strength velcro with a tape backing and apply one side to the back of the phone and one side to the mount. Just throwing this out as a suggestion.
