Super Tenere? Yes? No? Run like hell?

Goofy - Well, the 800 did not come out until 09, where as the 950 started in 04. Between 04 and 06' the 950 was carbs. 07-13 it was the 990 and was FI. In 09, there was a round of improvements made, which I think made it a much more polished machine, with less issues. My 10 was flawless. My 06 was also a good bike, but there were some issues to iron out. The F800 feels smaller and less scary to ride. The 950/990 is more pure fun, has better suspension and is better set up for off road, out of the box. One problem of the 800 is it can be buzzy around 75-80 mph. A well sorted 950 selling for around 5-6k would be a damn good buy! I have ridden the triumph 800xc as well, and that is pretty nice. Triumph has a great engine.

Reading your first post again, I really think a weestrom might fit your needs the best. If cost is no object, get an 1190, those are the king right now.

I have owned the 950 adv, 990 adv, vstrom 650, tiger, f800gs, and super tenere. That is it for my big adv bikes. The super tenere excels at road touring. It is the most reliable and most strongly built of the bunch. It has the lowest maintenance and the shaft drive on it will never break, trust me. It is also heavy, and kind of slow, relative to modern bikes. I found the super tenere to be far too large and heavy for off roading but I would also say that of any of the 1200 class, except the 1190 which I have not ridden. The F800 was my favorite for true adventure riding, easier to ride than the 950/990 and easier to work on. The vstrom is a great bike and not expensive. If you are not two up riding or dont need to go fast, look at a klr. I had more adventures on those than any other bike.
  4. Thanks guys for a fun day. Lets do it again soon.
  5. Chevron, oops. It was Mobil before, I promise.
  6. The Mobile station is on 371- right? Yes, 371 next to dairy queen
  7. It depends on the group we get, but nothing too technical since my bike is new and not armored up yet. Fireroads and maybe a moderate singletrack,
  8. I am currently sorting out some issues with my wiring so I won't be bringing mine. So far it's just you, myself, and maybe Jonathan (Jonathan, you out there?).

    Anyone try these boots/Company?

It may be cheaper to buy the best boots and buy them only once. I've been wearing the same pair of Sidi Crossfires for 8 years now, and they hardly show any wear, and they have protected me in many accidents, all while being insanely comfortable. I tried all the other high end boots and for me, nothing else came close. I've broken my ankle in lesser boots, so I believe in wearing the best. Most parts on it are replaceable with screws, in case you tear anything off them or wear anything out. http://www.atomic-moto.com/Sidi-Crossfire-2-SRS-Boots_p_1159.html
  10. Yes, in fact I hope to do a ride like this maybe 4 times a year or so. I also need to do a singletrack scouting ride in this area sometime soon. There are some trails I don't want to ride by myself.
  11. oops, forgot to update my profile, I actually live in Idyllwild. I will probably truck to the meeting point.
  12. I think I will lead a ride based out of Anza this Sunday the 28th. Anza, the mountain town south of Idyllwild, NOT Anza Borrego desert. Depending on numbers and how hard people want to ride, we can have two loops, the A route and the B route. But most likely we will just have one group unless we get another person who is familiar with this area and can lead. Plan on lunch in Idyllwild or Mountain Center. Temps will be from the 60's to the 80's and there will be elevation changes. As always, be self sufficient. Street legal bikes only. This ride will feature thomas mountain, indian mountain, and possibly red mountain and Hixon trail if people are Ok with some moderate singletrack. The ride could be up to 100 miles. Meet : Mobil gas station in Anza, near Dairy Queen, 9:00, kickstands up 9:30.

Anyone here have the brand new 14 KTM 500EXC?

I took a sawzall to the rear fender and moved the plate up, last night. Otherwise the tire will eat it, I hear. I am going with HDB handguards and their mirrors. Seat Concepts is doing my seat this week. Already changed the gearing and installed a skid plate. Larger tank coming, waiting to see my mpg first so I can determine how large I need. Overall, the list of needed items is much smaller than on a stock Japanese dual sport. Maybe $1,000 to set it up right, which is not bad.

Just got mine. It is a huge improvement over earlier EXC models. It pretty much resets your expectation of what a good off road bike is. It's in another league.
  15. I am coming down with a stomach bug. Feel like crap. I will have to bail on this ride. You guys have fun.
