I've left a bike parked at LAX before; away 4-5 days. No problems, and easy to get in/out. Spaces in the corners available. As others have said, helmet lock for sure and a cover help.

  13. Yes, the three B's didn't disappoint - nor did the one C-diddy. Great weekend with perfect conditions on Sun following a late night pouring of rain. Nice mix of terrain and sights, challenge and distance. Good group. And I even managed to make it back in time for the craft beer tasting this year!
  14. If someone is thinking of going but hasn't committed yet, now's the time to get off the fence. I'm looking to share the drive and accommodation at Mammoth, leaving from San Diego (Fri to Sun, but may be negotiable). Your vehicle or mine. It's a great event - I've been before but not in the last few. Not missing it this year! Questions or info, etc, reply here or by PM. Sean
  15. With several big rides scheduled this weekend, most folks likely have their riding plans already sorted. I'll be doing a short solo loop east of Julian Sun May 6 (tomorrow) starting by 9am. Staging at Pinyon off S2 about 8:30. Likely riding up Oriflamme, Rodriguez over to 78. Then to Grapevine, Jasper, Culp and reverse back to Pinyon parking. Open to variations, but thats the basic plan for a short 60/40 dirt ride. Canteen green Nissan SUV; 520EXC KTM. Moderate to fast pace (but open to intermediate). PM me if interested for phone, other timing info.

KTM 525 - when to rebuild?

I've been giving consideration to the top end of my '02 520 EXC recently as well. At about 5500 miles and 350 hours now (half easy, half hard) - long overdue by any KTM service recommendations I can find. Valve clearances recently in spec, carb recently serviced and oil/filters changed routinely. The fear of being stranded by a preventable mechanical is always in the back of my mind. Perhaps I can afford to wait another 50-100 hours and refresh it for peace of mind.
  17. Another great day in the AB desert with a great group. Thanks to Dave and Steve for leading a good cross-section of area trails. Steve, Justin, Dave orange steeds at rest
  18. Won't make Julian at 7am, but plan to be very shortly following..... coffee in hand.
  19. Hmmm... I might be up for a Sat ride too. Will pm.

    chain cleaning

wow - this is more fun than an oil thread! WD40 here only. clean is my goal, and no sticky film to pick up dirt or get flung where its not wanted. dirt accumulated in paste form will destroy the chain and sprockets. my street chains last 12-14K miles and I ran a rear sprocket in serviceable condition up to 31K miles once.

    Garmin 60CSx

very cool. I'm very jealous too, as I haven't flown a 172 in over a decade. thanks for posting - spend as much time with your dad as you can!
  22. thx for head's up, Randy. fyi, one more entry already in the mail from me, if you haven't seen it yet. (Sat & Sun). Sean
  23. Embarked on a short solo ride over Pinyon to Fish Creek Saturday morning. Perfect temp/conditions for riding. Met Steve and Rick (STeve63 CVRick, I believe) in the Pinyon lot and we decided to ride together halfway (they had planned to turn south to the mud caves and Sin Nombre, while I'd continue east then north). A few miles into the trail and the clutch lever on my 520 began losing feel. Came back for a while with the lever adjust. Just after the drop I mentioned it to Steve and Rick seeing as we'd essentially passed a point of no return. By Fairchild it had completely given out, resulting in my first fall since ACL & meniscus tear (+, +, etc) at Big Bear almost 18 months ago. Needed some clutch to help modify my line and the bike chose to keep going up the wall on the right and tried to loop before finally stalling. Quick push the last few feet from Steve and Rick, and back on the trail. New plan. Ride out the shortest route along Fish Creek, then Diablo back to the S2. Riding and stopping w/o clutch easy; starting again not so easy, but made it work. My thanks to Steve and Rick for some navigational input and a couple more pushes along the way. Those guys haul ass on their XR's. A slow rear flat for Steve ultimately had them skipping Sin Nombre and the three of us heading back to the trucks, ending the day a little early. All in all, still a good day out despite only 36 dirt miles, 56 total back to the Pinyon lot. Lots of people/trucks out; brief chat with the Ranger. Little dusty but great conditions. Sean
